Sean Lee: Whether 2 or 100 hours, I watch film until I feel comfortable and prepared

IRVING – A few weeks ago Jason Garrett mentioned how there are times at night when he walks by the film rooms at Valley Ranch and middle linebacker Sean Lee is still there, studying the Dallas Cowboys’ next opponent.

Is Lee putting in the extra hours because he enjoys studying film or is he there because that’s what gives him an edge on Sundays?

“I think it’s a combination of both,” Lee said Thursday. “I enjoy preparing for a game and trying to get ready. I enjoy when it pays off on Sunday. And some of your filmwork and your preparation shows up in the game.

“There’s no better feeling than when you’re out there and you have a feeling for what they’re doing and you feel really comfortable and can play fast. For me, though, however long it takes for me to feel comfortable and prepared that’s how long I’m going to take, whether that’s two hours or whether that’s a hundred hours. Usually it takes me a lot of hours to prepare and feel comfortable.”

Watching plays over and over again for several hours after a long day of practicing, lifting weights and listening to coaches certainly sounds like a grueling process. But for the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Month, it’s just part of the job.

“At times when you’re tired, it does [feel like work],” Lee said. “At times when you’re ready to go and pumped up, it doesn’t.”

Entering Week 10, Lee is tied for the league lead in tackles [90] and interceptions [four]. In August, the Cowboys signed Lee, 27, to a six-year, $42 million contract extension.
