Saints pursuing trade for Leary

While the Dallas Cowboys eye the market for a quarterback, could they be angling to trade a lineman, too?

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that fans should "keep an eye" on veteran guard Ronald Leary. Per a source informed of the talks, the Saints have pursued the experienced Cowboys blocker to no avail over the past few months.

A swap would make sense on multiple levels. Leary -- stuck playing behind La'el Collins -- asked for a trade in the offseason, but Dallas never received an appropriate offer. The Saints, though, could immediately plug Leary in at left guard, where Senio Kelemete and Tim Lelito are battling for a starting job. Lelito stood out last season against the run, but New Orleans remembers Leary's work from 2014, when he dominated the NFL as a road-grading guard in Dallas.

Carrying a base salary of $2.553 million this season, Leary becomes a free agent in March. At age 27, he still has plenty of football left and could help lineman-needy teams. The question boils down to what the Saints can offer in return. The Cowboys need quarterback help, but New Orleans can't offer much in that category. The other option would be a defensive lineman -- or maybe a draft pick.

We've seen trade action kick up in NFL circles over the past few seasons, and the 'Boys continue to operate like a team gunning for the Super Bowl. We'll find out soon enough if Leary will play out the year in Big D, The Big Easy -- or somewhere else.

Leary is not as valuable as many of you homers like to believe.

We'd be getting over in that trade.

Newy Scruggs: I'd trade for Bucs QB Mike Glennon using Cowboys O-lineman Ron Leary as bait
By Newy Scruggs

Newy Scruggs, sports anchor at NBC5 in Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS-TV) and radio host weekly from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on NBC Sports Radio Sirius XM 213/202 and NBCSportsRadio.com, answered questions in a live chat Wednesday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Is there a (free-agent) QB you like to replace Kellen Moore? Why not Nick Foles?

Scruggs: "I'm a fan of Mike Glennon. He was a good player at NC State and played well his first season. I'd make a trade with Tampa Bay if I can use Ron Leary as bait."

Question: Would you be comfortable with situation if Cowboys decided to go with Dak Prescott as Romo's backup?

Scruggs: "Stephen Jones told me on my NBC Sports Radio show they are going to bring in a veteran backup. They have to. The Cowboys can not afford to go into a season without a player who has taken some NFL snaps at the quarterback position behind Tony Romo."

Question: Shouldn't the Cowboys just go ahead and cut Rolando McClain?

Scruggs: "Should...but won't. The Cowboys want to save cap money. Every game he sits out, they don't have to pay him. He will miss ten checks because of his suspension. He didn't report so it's not like Rolando McClain is in Oxnard creating a distraction."

He's been in the league 3yrs and has 3 picks, including none last yr. Has only 5 passes defensed each of the last 2 yrs. Has been benched a couple different times. He did have 3 sacks last yr and is definitely more athletic than Church is, but I cant see our franchise being smart enough to cut bait with Church (who has only 1 yr left on his vastly overpaid contract) anyway.

Reports are that Leary looks great in this camp. He's been underrated anyway.

Yeah I've seen that too.

He is underrated, would hate to see us give him away anf get nothing of decent value in return. Fred & Martin really like him too.

Jerry isn't worth a damn at trading. Your thinking of Jimmy Johnson if your thinking of great Cowboy trades
