As I mentioned in another thread a few days ago, I wouldnt be against moving on from Romo after the year. he only has 1yr left on his deal, and while he has had some good moments this yr he's also had alot of bad ones. I dont know if he is playing hurt or not, but assuming he is healthy then in just looking at the way he is throwing the ball, one would conclude he is starting to get closer to the end. Too many ducks or poorly thrown balls, downfield passing has been poor and his velocity on alot of these throws seems less to me.
He still has trade value and I suspect we'd get at least one #1 pick for him from some QB desperate team like KC or Arizona.
That said, its highly unlikely Jones would have the cajones to make this type of move, and if Garrett is still the HC Romo is a lock to be back. I suspect he'd be a lock to be back (and extended) if either Sean Payton or Mike Holmgren were to replace Garrett as well.
The only way we dont have Romo here next yr or fail to extend his contract IMO is if Jones hired somebody like a Bill Cowher, and gave him control of most of the FO. Cowher doesnt have any affiniti for Romo and likely wouldnt want to have a turnover prone QB as his starter, so he might be inclined to convince Jones to get whatever he can for Romo and go forward with orton for a yr or twom, until a replacement is ready (somebody we'd draft this yr or next)
