Offensively:
For the most part, the offensive line protected Tony well. As always, when Romo has time, he scorches defenses. Skins had no answer for our passing attack. There were a couple of occasions where Haslett brought pressure, via twists and stunts, that our line didnt pick up well that led to pressure. Unlike Ryan, Haslett really likes to get after opposing QBs and force mistakes.
Turnovers- we had WAY too many turnovers in this game. Ultimately, losing the turnover battle by 2 likely is what did us in. Dez had a huge fumble while we were driving and Tony had a huge INT right before the half. Both led to TDs for the skins and it's quite possible both took away points from us. So that's a huge swing there.
Penalties - specifically pre snap penalties. Even more specifically in the redzone. I want to say we had 3 penalties on two separate drives in the redzone that turned drives that could have finished with 7 as opposed to 3.
Murray - Did not play. We had no run game whatsoever.
Defensively:
You wouldn't believe it, but aside from giving up a couple HUGE plays, I thought our defense played well enough to win.
I don't know how many sacks we had, I know it was at least 4..but we got a tremendous amount of pressure on RG3
Our run defense was actually pretty solid. I anticipated them having better success on the ground, but for the most part I think we played it well.
After Romo threw his INT right before the half, the skins marched about 40 some yards in about 40 seconds to go up 28-3..that was a huge drive before the half. Somehow, someway, the defense has to hold Washington to a FG there.
The defense was put in tough positions on two drives. The one mentioned above and the drive after Dez's fumble. As I mentioned earlier, the skins capitalized on both.
I am probably Rob Ryan's biggest hater. I absolutely hate the bend but don't break defense. I would much rather have a Dcoord like Haslett who knows his defense sucks but is ok with giving up big plays but forcing the issues and trying to make just enough plays defensively to win the game. HOWEVER, against this Redskins attack I feel as if the bend but don't break defense is absolutely the best approach. The skins should very little ability to sustain drives in the first meeting. Make them put long drives together and eliminate the big plays.
Looking Ahead:
I think this matchup sets up perfectly for us. Our pass protection recently has been much improved. If Romo gets anywhere near as good protection as he did the last two weeks, we will have a field day throwing the ball. Romo has done a great job recently of taking care of the ball and he has to make sure he does the same this week, ultimately this will decide our fate. Getting Murray back will definitely help our ground game, but I don't expect is to run the ball very much or very well. I also love the way our defense matches up vs Washington. I don't expect us to shut Washington down by any means. However, in today's game, it boils down to which defense can make just enough stops to win. I feel like as long as we don't get burned by NUMEROUS big plays, we should be ok. And if we do get burned by big plays, just keep them within the redzone.
The biggest worry I have is that this team is notorious for starting slowly. Just as we did in our first meeting. If this game is tied, or we have the lead at the half, we will win this game. If we are down, and we have to fight our way back, like we do just about every week, it will be another nail biter.
I have been as pessimistic as any. But after reviewing the first game, I honesty think this is the best possible matchup for us. If we take care of the ball and minimize their big plays, which I think we can and will do, I think we will win this game.
Look for Romo to have a huge night and FINALLY start to get the national love that he deserves.
