Report: Cowboys turned down four teams interested in Mike Jenkins

Posted by Josh Alper on June 4, 2012, 9:42 AM EDT

The Cowboys have insisted several times recently that they aren’t interested in trading cornerback Mike Jenkins and their actions speak as loudly as their words.

Len Pasquarelli of the Sports Xchange reports that they have turned down four different teams that have inquired about making trades for Jenkins. Two of those teams — the Colts and Lions — have been reported previously, but the report doesn’t identify the other two teams sniffing around for a deal. The reasons why the Cowboys aren’t making a deal are the same ones that we’ve known for a while and that might be why Pasquarelli also reports that the Cowboys aren’t going to change their mind come training camp.

The Cowboys have said that they don’t feel like you can have enough cornerbacks, something that has definitely seemed to be the truth during recent NFL seasons. Jenkins is set to make just over $1 million in the final year of his rookie deal, which is an easy salary to fit under the cap for a player who would be on the field as much as Jenkins could potentially be in 2012.

There’s always the possibility that the Cowboys are banging the drum publicly about their unwillingness to make a deal so that the interested parties up their offers once the season gets closer. That might even cross the line from possibility to likelihood given the fact that Jenkins doesn’t even profile as the team’s third cornerback ahead of Orlando Scandrick. Unless the return in a trade rises above what the team might get as a compensatory pick after Jenkins leaves as a free agent, there’s not a particularly compelling reason to make a deal.

I like Mike Jenkins, a lot actually but we just invested huge money (Carr) and a 1st and 2nd(Claiborne) at his position. Jerry Jones does two thing horribly as our "General Manager". He gambles on players HE likes too much and he holds onto players too long. We are going to lose Mike Jenkins to free agency. In return, we may get a 2014 compensatory pick and that all depends on how many players we sign vs how many players we lose as well as the amount of the contracts involved. Take the pick now. We are talking about the 4th CB spot here in reality and I'm okay letting a guy like Mario Butler develop here. Injuries are a part of football and they can and will happen at all positions. It's a great luxury to have 4 solid CB's but this team has so many needs in their 2-deep already.

We seem so willing to gamble on our 3rd WR spot with unproven, undrafted players but we are terrified about our 4th CB spot?

Yeah, I guess you haven't heard. Jerry doesn't know what he's doing.

Getting rid of Jenkins does nothing to help us this season. Noone's terrified but it's a pointless exercise and we don't know what was offered. So if we're serious about winning this year it makes sense to have him play out his contract and have good depth at a position we value.

I would agree if I felt we are a legit Superbowl contender. I just don't see how we are (I know anyone can win dbair and the Giants are the worst team ever blah blah blah) with the holes we still have at Interior OL, Safety, and a complimentary pass rusher. We are better at CB no doubt and we are faster at ILB losing Brooking and James but where else did we improve for the 2012 season? Even if you're in love with guys like Tyrone Crawford, Matt Johnson, Kyle Wilber, etc. they aren't really being counted on to have an impact in 2012.

If we are a legit contender right now counting on guys like Phil Costa, Bill Nagy, and Brodney Pool to play major roles as starters, then you are 100% right, keep Jenkins. I just have a feeling we are going to lose him and get nothing to little in return, just like we did with Martellus Bennett. Like Bennett or not, he had value, and we just watched a 2008 2nd rounder walk to a rival, for free. I'm worried we are going to watch Mike Jenkins (2008 1st), Felix Jones (2008 1st), and Anthony Spencer (2007 1st) all walk next off-season. Succesful teams can't keep losing high investment draft picks 4 or 5 years into their careers. Sure, all teams miss on high draft picks but you don't draft a guy in the 1st or 2nd with the thinking they are only here for 4 years. You draft players in the 1st and 2nd to be cornerstones of your franchise.

This one is about price.

If the Cowboys were offered enough, Jenkins would be gone.

Having depth is never a bad thing. Sometimes you just lose players, and just losing them is preferable to letting them go and then having an injury crisis and being unable to start your 2013 fourth round draft pick against Hakeem Nicks. The first rounders moving on happens literally all the time, even to successful teams.

How many corners did StL lose last season? How many times have we looked deep as hell at RB and then week 7 we're like...uh...is Ray Lewis' little brother available?

Fourth round draft pick gets us nothing this year, Mike Jenkins can do some things. New England has continually done that shit and left Brady to make up for their failings as a front office. He's a fucking champ so he does it pretty well but that FO's eagerness to get rid of players just so they can get something for them has cost them in the short term quite a few times.

You're not wrong but the Patriots have legitimately remained Superbowl contenders for the last several years and we, well, we haven't. The Patriots load up on draft picks, trade players when they have top value (Seymour, Cassel), sign veteran free agents
to fill holes, etc. , remain relevant and go to the Superbowl or AFC Championship game almost every year.

We change strategies every few years, 2009 draft trade down to the last few years of targeting players and moving up, 2010 no free agents to 2012 nine free agents, etc, and haven't been to the NFC Championship game since 1994.

It's extremely frustrating to have a GM who's learning the basics as he goes along.

Do we even know what the pick is? Right now, Claiborne is out with a wrist injury. I think what Jones is doing ks prudent. There is no need to rush Jenkins out the door just yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rob Ryan was behind this. He said he wanted DBs and now has 4 quality, er, 2 quality and 2 semi-quality ones (Jenkins and Scandrick are barely suitable).

The Pats have Brady holding shit down and play in a weak-ass division. The point is even then, their tactics have cost them and put enormous pressure on Brady to carry them, which he does admirably. But I'm sure there has been some times when he wishes Samuel was there so he wasn't having to put up 35+ for a win, or Branch was there so he had someone to pass to against Indy, etc.

We put the same pressure on Romo, and he does his best, but there's no reason to have any problem with us keeping as much talent as possible around as we try to beat our closing window. Especially without even knowing what was offered.

Hell we would be too if our division consisted of the Dolphins, Bills, and Jets.

It must be nice that without playing a game to start the year knowing you are gonna split with the Jets if not beat them twice, beat the Bills twice and the Dolphins too. That's 5 to 6 wins before the season starts for God's Sake. Why do you think they went 11-5 the year that they lost Brady? What a leg up on the rest of the league.

Yes, I know there have been years where this wasn't the case, but by in large.... I'm pay real money to have that division surrounding the Cowboys.

I still don't think Jenkins will be with dallas week one. Think this article hits it right on the button. The closer the season gets and injuries come up the likel scenario the team will get a better offer.
