I loved the idea of having the 3-4, but we never ran it correctly.

What makes it effective is the QB not being sure where the 4th rusher is coming from.

With us, it was almost always Ware. So it was never a suprise really where that 4th rusher came from

This theory is overblown. It's no different than a blitz from the 4-3. The 3-4 teams have their main pass rusher at ROLB, just like the 4-3 teams have theirs at RDE.


Or maybe Giants were dropping LT into coverage a bunch to try and confuse the QB?

The defense itself isnt stupid. The idea of dropping your best pass rusher into coverage on 3rd and 8 in the 4th qtr IS stupid though.

Lawrence Taylor dropped into coverage at times as well. You can't be too predictable.

Basically the 3-4 boils down to trying to disguise your 3rd blitzer.

We tried it a few times under the supposedly 'aggressive' Phillips.

I think Ware will have a good season but not his best. I think the confusion of the 3-4 helped generate easy sacks for him. A number of times he came unblocked. That won’t happen in the 4-3, he will be accounted for on each play. I also think dropping him in coverage gave him a breather while keeping him on the field. I think he will be less productive in the 4th quarter because he will be over used and tired from rushing every down. I will miss watching Ware rush standing up. I just think it looks intimidating and he was very good at it.

Yep, he was really awesome at that. Two yrs of coaching and half the defense didn't know how to line up on any given play.
