. .On a night when the Giants got a breakout performance from their latest first-round draft pick, another first-rounder suffered yet another bad break.
The sight of Prince Amukamara being carted off the field was enough to put a damper on the stellar showing of rookie running David Wilson, who totaled 75 yards in his debut as a starter in the Giants’ preseason game against the Bears on Friday night. Amukamara suffered a high right ankle sprain late in the first quarter – an injury that could keep him out up to six weeks, and possibly longer.
That means the Giants will now be without two of their top three cornerbacks when the open the regular season against the Dallas Cowboys in 11 days. And unless Terrell Thomas returns quicker than expected from his ACL injury, the Giants figure to be without them both for at least the first month.
Amukamara suffered his latest injury late in the first quarter when he was defending Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, who leaped to catch an 8-yard pass a few yards in front of him. The Giants’ corner appeared to be trying to make a low tackle on Marshall and may have planted his right foot awkwardly.
Amukamara tried to get up, but obviously couldn’t and rolled onto his back until the doctors arrived. Moments later, players were around him and even Tom Coughlin came all the way across the field to check on his fallen player as Giants players gathered around.
The injury was the end of a rough week for Amukamara, the Giants’ first-round pick out of Nebraska in the 2011 draft. He spent much of the week answering unwanted questions about a video that was posted on the internet of him being thrown head-first into a cold tub by teammate Jason Pierre-Paul during training camp. After that, he had to answer questions about teammates hinting he needed to play with more “swag”.
Not surprisingly, he had been looking forward to getting back to football, but that really hasn’t worked out well for him since the Giants took him in the first round out of Nebraska in the 2011 draft. After losing his first offseason as a rookie to the lockout, Amukamara broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot in just his second NFL practice and ended up missing the first nine games of the regular season.
He also had a stem cell injection in that foot during the offseason, keeping him sidelined for most of the spring.
Now he’ll be on the sidelines again, where he’ll be joined by Thomas, who re-injured his ACL in training camp and figures to miss at least the next month, if not more. They’re also joined by Hosley, the impressive rookie out of Virginia Tech who suffered a turf toe injury in the Giants’ game against the Jets last weekend. Hosley said he expects to be back on the practice field next week, but as of Wednesday he still had a boot on his injured right foot.
Meanwhile, Wilson, the Giants’ 2012 first-round pick, has had much better luck in his brief career. Starting in place of the injured Ahmad Bradshaw, Wilson he put together some dynamic and powerful runs, gaining 49 on just five carries – including 26 yards on two runs after the initial hit. He also caught two passes for 26 yards, too.
The performance likely solidified Wilson as the No. 2 running back behind Bradshaw, who is expected to be back in the lineup on Opening Night.
The Giants’ more pressing need now, though, is at cornerback where Bruce Johnson and then Michael Coe filled in for Amukamara. Johnson, a fourth-year pro out of Miami, missed all of 2011 with a ruptured Achilles he suffered in training camp. Coe, a sixth-year pro, missed the last half of last season with a shoulder injury
