I think the offense, other than a couple of backup spots is pretty much set.
We'll probably know a lot more after tonight and next week about the defense, but assuming it continues as bad as has been described, I suspect there's going to be numerous moves (whether its free agents after final cut downs, waiver claims or a trade or two) for us before the season opener vs SF.
DE- Selvie. Seems like a lock, but like so many other guys I think he is hurt. Just returned to practice and is playing behind Crawford.
DT- Melton. Brought him here to be an important piece, but coming off injury he is hurt again too. Might not play at all in preseason now. I think they said 7th rd pick Ken Bishop was starting for him tonight.
DT- Nick Hayden. Only positive with him is he seems to be the one guy who can actually stay on the field. But he stinks and needs to be replaced. Terrell McClain got a lot of positive talk, but par for the course, is hurt and wont play again.
DE- Mincey. Probably gets this job by default now that Lawrence is gone for a long time. I guess its possible Selvie could move to RDE and maybe Crawford plays LDE. Spencer is a wildcard here, not counting on him but there seems to be hope he might be ready to go by week two now.
OLB- Carter (for now). if McClain shows he can play MLB well, then it appears Durant is going to move to WLB and Carter will be benched (or maybe they try and trade him). Also saw they are trying Carter as a weakside DE in pass rush sits again.
MLB- Durant (today). Supposedly he has been one of the few bright spots of camp, which to me really shows how bad things are. That said he seems to be getting more and more comfortably at MLB. Could end up at WLB (which is where Marinelli says is his natural pos) if McClain could regain his Alabama form at MLB.
OLB- Wilbur. Seems to have found a home here. Hollomon doesn't appear to be seriously pushing him for a job. Wilbur has also gotten snaps as a pass rusher on nickel downs.
CB- Carr. I guess. Missed most of camp and once he did return the reports are pretty negative. Wont play tonight either.
CB- Scandrick. Gone first 4 games now but clearly the teams best CB at this point. Claiborne starts for him (if he can ever stay healthy). I do wonder if Scandrick/Claiborne are really the two best CB's for us. Carr was putrid last yr.
S- Church. OK starter. Nothing special but ok.
S- Wilcox. Midswat wants to make serious love to him. Contrary to some here, I do think Wilcox will be a solid player.
Honestly I wouldn't be shocked if there are 4 to 6 defensive guys on the final 53 who arnt here today.
