Former NFL GM Bill Polian: Cowboys’ Anthony Spencer will ‘thrive’ in Monte Kiffin’s defense

The Dallas Cowboys announced Tuesday that Anthony Spencer has signed his franchise tender.

The move likely means Spencer will be lining up at defensive end, opposite of DeMarcus Ware in Monte Kiffin’s new 4-3 scheme.

But will Spencer be able to make the transition from 3-4 outside linebacker? After all, he’s coming off his best season with a career-high 11 sacks and 106 tackles.

Former NFL GM Bill Polian said Monday on ESPN that he “absolutely” thinks Spencer will have success returning to the position he played during his collegiate career at Purdue.

“In Monte Kiffin’s defense they’re going to play him in a seven technique, nine technique,” Polian explained. “He’s going to be outside, upfield. He’ll thrive in that. That’s what he did at Purdue. We were excited about him when he was coming out.”

Polian was vice chairman of the Indianapolis Colts in 2007 when Spencer was drafted by the Cowboys with the 26th overall pick. The Colts had the 32nd overall pick and selected wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez.
