The start of the NFL's nationally televised afternoon games will be pushed back 10 minutes to avoid overlap with 1 p.m. games, according to Sports Business Journal.
Starting this season, afternoon games will kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET instead of 4:15 p.m. ET. The late games on the non-national network will still begin at 4:05 p.m. ET.
NFL games have become increasingly longer in recent years, due to higher scoring, more penalties and interminable replay reviews. With the NFL's overtime playoff system moving to the regular season, the length of games should see another uptick.
Pushing the games back helps avoid the inevitable overlap. It also will be a boon for Fox and CBS, which will get an additional 10 minutes of NFL football in its prime-time ratings window. There's been no word on how the move will affect those networks' Sunday night shows, but I'd imagine they'll keep the status quo. Despite Jim Nantz's repeated statements to the contrary, "60 Minutes" hasn't started at 7 p.m. in years, except on the West Coast. It remains in that time slot to maximize advertising dollars.
