NFL.com: Cowboys to keep Garrett....may hire OC

The Dallas Cowboys are planning to make changes after failing to make the playoffs for a second consecutive season under coach Jason Garrett.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Garrett's job is secure, but Dallas does plan to bring in help on the offensive side of the ball.

"The Cowboys intend to keep Jason Garrett, I have not heard this morning that that has changed," Rapoport told NFL Network's "Around the League" on Monday. "A better possibility is that the Cowboys could hire an offensive coordinator to call plays for Jason Garrett and allow him to be a walk-around coach and essentially just be the leader of men that they think he can be."

The move would require some finessing of titles because offensive line coach Bill Callahan also holds the title of offensive coordinator. Callahan's role is more hands off because Garrett has called plays in Dallas during his 21-19 run with the team. That obviously would change.

The Cowboys are showing faith in Garrett's leadership. He navigated his team through some tricky scenarios in 2012 and had the Cowboys at the brink of a playoff berth. Dallas fell short once again, but the team believes minor -- not major adjustments -- are in order.

Bill Callahan, you're getting the same amount of money but you're no longer the pretend Offensive Coordinator. Sound okay?

Also, if you could actually improve the O Line some that would be great. Thanks buddy.

I'm not fine with it.

The guy was hired to be a HC based on his OC performance, wasn't he?

Now he's not good enough to be an OC and we've seen him fuck up multiple game management situations this year alone. I can count three off the top of my head right now.

Baltimore

Washington

The game slips my mind but he made dumb ass calls from inside the opponents territory and was only bailed out by a great run by Murray at the end of the game.

If not for his OC abilities, why did he get the HC job? Wishes and dreams of being the leader of men?

What does a QB do when he throws a pick or even turns the ball over on downs? Everywhere else in the league I see him head over to the bench and within a few seconds you see him talking to his OC. Not Romo, he's either talking to that moron Wade Wilson (rarely) or he's sitting by himself pouring water on his face or looking at polaroids. I think I saw him talking to Callahan for the first time Sunday night.

That's why I'm not buying the whole "Callahan is the OC" thing.

I'm wondering if he'll even be back as OL coach.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if they did hire someone else to call plays (such as Norv). Turner might prefer another OL coach that he is more familiar with and knows his offensive style better.

We were all excited about the additions of Callahan and Jerome Henderson, but both were let downs IMO. The only OL that looked "improved" to me was Costa, and he didnt get enough playing time to know if he had truly taken a step forward we could count on.

You have to give coaches time to get to know players and learn how to use them to their strengths. This instant evaluation is never the right approach. You will constantly find yourself replacing coach after coach. It’s like understanding the process of building a team is foreign to many of you guys. You have to give coaches and players a learning curve.

It doesn't make sense to scrap an Oline blocking scheme after one year and radically change the whole makeup. Unless you guys are talking rebuilding mode.

Jerry doesn't ever see rebuilding and Cowboys in the same sentence.

Yeah! 18 years or more. Give this team time guys!

I was referencing two coaches that were here only a year. But hey, you guys gots all the answers. Let’s just keep firing coach after coach hoping one of them strikes lightning in their first year. There is no big picture in any of it.

Blows my mind the excuses people come up with to defend Garrett.

Per Vela, Garretts problems are the offensive line. Vela disagrees that Garrett is a terrible gameplanner or makes poor in game adjustments.

Nope. All offensive woes are because of the Oline.

Tweeted to him that hey... Garrett picked out this Oline.

No response.

Its a problem when he constantly blows big games with bad turnovers.

Well you want to know something... Romo wouldn't being "blowing" these big games IF he was able to play with a significant lead and not have to try to always bring the team back from behind.

Tell me about it.

This is the same fucker that on the opening Sunday Night game against the Redskins in 2010.

With 4 SECONDS left in the first half.

The score is 3-0 Redskins.

The Cowboys were on their OWN 36 YARD LINE. Which means they would either have to travel the length of 74 yards to get a TD OR... 38 yards to get to the Redskins' 36 yard line to get into FG range for Buehler.

Mind you, Buehler missed at that range earlier in that game. ALL OF THIS IN 4 SECONDS.

We know the rest. Choice fumbles. Hall scoops it up, and runs it in for a TD. WE LOST THAT GAME 13-7.

EVERY SINGLE COACH would have simply taken the knee.

LOL. How many seconds were left in the first half of the Redskins' game this past Sunday, and it would've been a 54 yard FG for Baily, but Garrett opt out of it? But yet with 4 seconds, he was willing to try and move the ball 70+ yards. SMH.
