Jerry Jones needs to get over himself

Matt Mosley started his career at the Dallas Morning News, where he covered the Dallas Cowboys. He was the first full-time NFL blogger at ESPN.com. Mosley can be heard weekdays as part of Galloway and Co. on ESPN Radio 103.3 FM. Follow Mosley on Twitter: @MattMosley

February 11, 2013

Jerry Jones has been humiliating his employees for years, so his treatment of Jason Garrett this offseason shouldn't have caught anyone by surprise. But there's been a brazenness to Jones' statements and actions that has upped the ante in some respects.

It's certainly his prerogative to keep this organization in the ditch any way he sees fit, but to watch him strip a family member of his dignity has raised some eyebrows. Even Garrett's close friend and former teammate, Troy Aikman, thinks the head coach has little say in his own future. It was remarkable to hear a positive guy like Aikman have such a bleak outlook for the Cowboys' 2013 season.

Never fear, though, because the word of Garrett's demise has finally pierced the walls of Valley Ranch. Jones suddenly took to the team's website last week in a ham-handed attempt to save face for his head coach. He's insisting that Garrett was leading the way in making changes on both sides of the ball. I happen to know otherwise because I'm quite familiar with the voices who were telling Jerry to hire former Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Still, it's humorous to hear Jones provide some new spin.

"He basically sat down and said 'Here's the kind of coach I want,' " Jones said of Garrett. "He did the evaluation. He basically said, 'Jerry, here's who I want to get.' "

Well, that clears up everything. I can just hear Jason saying something to the effect of, "Jerry, let"s start out by getting rid of my brother John. And I think we need more age on the defensive staff."

Jerry could've easily solved this problem by at least suggesting from the start that Garrett was calling the shots when it came to coaching changes. Instead, Jones undercut his head coach immediately and strongly hinted there would be a new offensive playcaller. I still think Jerry was almost trying to shame Garrett into quitting, but Princeton men have been trained not to leave $8 million on the table. Now, Jones appears to be doing charity work regarding his head coach.

"I saw things about our head coach that really give me a lot of promise for not only 2013, but for years to come. I'm excited about Jason Garrett," Jones told the website. "I think we can take those kinds of positives, and Jason Garrett is certainly one of them from my evaluation, we can take the things that we have done very well and we can take the things we felt like we can do better, and that's what this offseason is about."

Step right up and purchase those season tickets, folks. This is now an organization that has a ceremonial head coach and a bulletproof quarterback. Unlike other organizations, the Cowboys haven't taken a serious stab at drafting Romo's replacement over the past seven years, which gives him a remarkable amount of leverage when it comes to a long-term contract extension.

Jerry has tied himself so much to Romo that the quarterback's lack of playoff wins (one) is of little consequence at the negotiating table. We should all be so lucky to be judged more on potential than actual production. Sadly, all employers aren't like Jerry. There are teams such as the Ravens that decide to let a quarterback earn his extension. Baltimore will now pay dearly to retain the services of Joe Flacco, but having that Super Bowl ring will make it a lot easier to digest.

The Cowboys are in a familiar spot because they have no appreciable plan. Jerry has watched teams such as the Packers, Giants and Ravens get hot in the playoffs in recent years, so he subscribes to the "lightning in a bottle" theory.

He and Garrett talked boldly of "rebuilding" the Cowboys offensive line, but that's been an agonizing experience. They may have gotten it right with Tyron Smith at left tackle, but the rest of the unit is beyond shaky.

That's what happens when you routinely miss on draft picks and end up putting things in the hands of the immortal Phil Costa at center. The Cowboys had to trade a seventh-round pick for center Ryan Smith to even have a shot at staying afloat.

But Jerry's so intoxicated by the thought of this new "Tampa 2" scheme that he can't be bothered by negative thoughts. And that's why normally optimistic folks such as Aikman are so dismissive of this team's chances moving forward.

Jerry had the chance to do something bold when Sean Payton unexpectedly hit free agency. But the Cowboys owner is much more comfortable with status quo than he'd like us to believe. Jerry would rather miss the playoffs on an annual basis than risk someone else becoming the face of the franchise. And that's why relegating Garrett to full-time puppet status is so appealing to him.

Jerry wants to make everyone in the organization uncomfortable ... except himself.

Spot on. Except for Baltimore tried to extend Flacco before this past season at something like 16 mil a year and Flacco turned it down. And it was Ryan Cook, not Ryan Smith.

Otherwise, spot on.

Troy Aikman on 105.3: Tony Romo can lead Cowboys to a Super Bowl: "He's a special player. Unfortunately not a lot of people recognize that."

Troy Aikman said he "marvels" at how Jerry Jones is able to keep calm after games. Said Jones was always the team's biggest supporter.

Troy Aikman on Cowboys: "There are some good coaches that left the building, there are some good coaches that just came into the building."

Troy Aikman: "I don’t view the coaching part of it as the reason why this team didn’t make it to the postseason." (via 105.3 The Fan)

I still think the right thing to do was to let Garrett go, but I dont believe that Jones decided to keep him over a few million dollars. Jones has plenty of money.

That said, the coaching changes being made (new DC, to an extent new playcaller on offense) were necessary changes for the team to get better. If Garrett didnt "think" of it or want to do it, that was all the more reason to let him go IMO. If Jones had decided he really didnt want to fire Garrett, then he did the right thing by insisting on those changes IMO. The team was not going to get better with everything remaining as-is.

Babe and moose said this was the strangest offseason they have ever seen except the Jerry jimmy split offseason of 94.

Translation Jerry did whatever he wanted and Garrett was forced to accept it. Babe said right out a few weeks ago lacewell hired Kiffin.

And mosely needs to get over the fact that romo doesn't like him, because mosely is a douche of epic proportions. He has been harping on romo for years because romo doesn't talk to him anymore.

Next year is going to be awful, we all know it and it sucks.

I'm not convinced about that at all. If Kiffin does a better job as DC than Ryan did (not that hard IMO) and we can stay healthier, the team can be improved. The biggest improvement might come though if the team really does address and upgrade the OL. Our offense could be pretty damn good if that happens.

I think you are wrong here.

Paying 8 million to Garrett along with another 3-5 million for a new coach would drive him crazy regardless of the money he has.

The man's ego would have to accept the fact that he was dead wrong about the coach he has praised for years. Now I have to pay him and he's not here.

I dont think so

If we fix the Oline, I think we can compete. Romo can carry this team basically.

If we go half-assed on the Oline, I think we're 8-8 again.

We should be able to compete.

U can't discount the players looking sideways at a coach with no power though. It always turns out bad.

It sucks for us fans that even if we have a miserable year at the mat we will just get a different head coach and no real change.

Real change would be the top front office guys getting fired along with the staff.

Jerry, Stephen, Tom ciskowski and the staff.

But that won't happen here. It will just be a retread like gruden or lovie and Jerry will trade up for the wr de jour when Austin is released after this season. And the cycle will continue.

We could have built on the camraderie and no quit that the team showed and empowered the head coach which is the right thing to do if you are keeping him but Jerry just did his usual routine.

I don't understand why Garrett did not resign and walk away tbh. I feel bad for him today, starting with today's pc he is going to get treated like wade.

I predicted us to go 7-9 last year yet u guys just want to believe about me what you want.

Everyday one of u idiots here calls me a homer, which is not accurate. We have a bunch of good players and there are a lot if things to be positive about concerning them. U guys mistakenly turn that into I'm a homer.

Calling people a homer or realist is the stupidest thing ever by the way.

He didn't resign because he's getting paid ridiculously well. And I think he knows the shine is off his star. I really think it'd be hard for him to get anything other than a position gig in the NFL at this point.

Various thoughts...

Mosley doesn't hate Romo at all, he's always joking with the other guys on that show that he's the only one who got an invite to Tony's wedding. He does think Romo might benefit from some competition and a coach who really pushed him, though.

There's no doubt Jerry did all this, all the evidence is obvious, but it won't be long after this press conference today that everyone starts convincing themselves maybe Garrett did do it. Because people still like him and want to believe it.

Speaking of, this PC today will won't tell us anything. Garrett will be handled with the ultimate kid gloves like he has been all along. Book it.

We definitely can be very good next year. We should have been the last two years. We do have the players, most of all the Qb. Taking the offense out of Garrett's hands will help a lot.

I'm not sure Jerry making these moves makes all that much difference in the locker room. Heard Greg Ellis on the fan that night Gruden was rumored to be in Dallas and he said the team all knows Jerry is the one in charge anyway. And he admitted it did hurt the team sometimes (no detail there) but it didn't mean the players shouldn't do their jobs.

Sadly, in the big picture, going 9-7 and making the playoffs next year might be the worst thing that could happen because Jerry keeps everything status quo for a few more years. If we collapsed or just went another bland 8-8, I think something real might
happen.

And oh yeah, Jerry is that cheap and he does hate paying coaches to sit at home. Even if he is a billionaire.

It's just like Aikman said about Jerry being so upbeat after losses, he is pissed and disappointed but he gets over it right away. I think he knew after the season he should probably fire Garrett but a little time passes and he convinces himself that hey, we're close, and I think things will be better next year if I just change up a few things.

I always like it when the light comes on for someone new. In 5 more years, there should be almost no Cowboy fans that are also "Jerry supporters", save maybe one blowhard in my state.
