***UPDATE***Cap-strapped Cowboys hosting three free agents, including former Raiders safety Michael Huff, Monday but can’t offer deals

The Cowboys are sticking their proverbial toe in the free agent market Monday by hosting linebacker Justin Durant and safeties Michael Huff and Will Allen for informational visits, according to sources.

But with just $102,000 in space under the 2013 salary cap of $123,000 the Cowboys are doing no more than window shopping.

According to a source, the visits should not be considered an indicator that deals are imminent with quarterback Tony Romo or linebacker Anthony Spencer to lower their cap number and free up salary room to sign free agents.

Nothing has changed regarding those negotiations.

But the visits are an indicator of the Cowboys interest in shoring up positions of concern at some point.

The Cowboys have uncertainty at safety where projected starters Barry Church and Matt Johnson are coming off the injuries. Johnson is a huge question mark after not playing in a game or even practicing much as a rookie last year.

Huff, the Irving native and the former Texas Longhorn, is the biggest name. He is a former first round pick who was released by the Oakland Raiders last week after eight years there.

He has 93 career starts and has reportedly drawn interest from the Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers as well as the Cowboys.

Huff is visiting the Cowboys before a planned visit to Baltimore later this week.

Allen started seven games for the Steelers last year and has 33 career starts. He has experience under new coordinator Monte Kiffin back to their days together in Tampa Bay from 2004-2008. Allen has largely been a backup player in the NFL.

The Cowboys are also looking for insurance at strong side linebacker where the inexperienced and unproven Kyle Wilber is projected to start.

Durant played the last two years with the Detroit Lioins where he started 14 games last year. He played the first four seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Assuming the money were the same elsewhere, not sure why a quality FA would pick Dallas these days.

Vonta Leach -- I was disappointed that the Cowboys couldn't land him last year. Leach has got be very happy about how things worked out.....

I still don't understand how there is a $123,000 salary cap.:Dunce

But even more absurd, and not remotely a typo, is this gem:

"Cowboys have uncertainty at safety where projected starters Barry Church and Matt Johnson are coming off the injuries. Johnson is a huge question mark after not playing in a game or even practicing much as a rookie last year."

A fourth round pick that hasn't done a single palpable thing except exhaust the medical staff is a projected starter? It's beyond a huge question mark, it's a metaphysical improbability. Are we still waiting for Dwayne Goodrich as well?

Think he's starter by default.

Do we have any other safeties on the roster?

And don't say Danny McCray (assuming he's still here - I don't even know). He's a special team specialist at best.

How fuckin' stupid. Bring someone in but you don't have any money to sign anyone.

Why bother?!

Pretty sure agents wouldnt send their clients for visits if they thought it was a waste of time.

They obviously know they are going to have some cap space pretty quick, otherwise nobody would be coming.

Church is the realness. If Johnson is halfway competent he should be fine.

I think we're all rooting for him, sp. But the guy ran a 6.2 forty before rupturing his achilles. Honestly, I'd be suprised if he ever enters a season as the starter again.

The article suggested no deal was close, but here's this tweet by Eatman...

‏@nickeatman 4m You don't bring people in without the intent to buy .. Romo deal has to be close .. As in hours maybe

I'm skeptical myself, but since he was never all that fast to begin with maybe it wont impact his play as much as someone who depended on speed.

Also am not a MD, but am curious as to whether there are different levels of achilless injuries and if so, perhaps he had a milder version. Wasnt there reports that the guy was already running and stuff?

I'm not even confident in calling him default depth. The safest statement would be: "Church as the starter and the other safety position is open. Matt Johnson, a fourth round pick who has drawn hope as an injured redeemer second only to Jesus as the answer to Dallas's eternal safety problem (wink) is pathetically the only option on the roster."

How is that?
