Stephen Jones says Cowboys' starters at safety are probably on the team right now, and you know who he means

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team could very well add a safety in free agency or the draft, but that it’s likely the two starters are on the team now.

“We may get some insurance there ... We’ve got some players to draft and college free agents to get, but we do think our two young guys could start for us,” Jones said Monday from the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

The “two young guys” are, of course, fourth-year veteran Barry Church and 2012 fourth-round pick Matt Johnson. But combined, they appeared in only three games last year – and that was all Church. Johnson spent the year sidelined by hamstring problems, and Church suffered an Achilles tear in Week 3.

So Jones said the Cowboys do want to cover themselves with a veteran, if possible.

“That’s why we’re going to have to have insurance at the end of the day,” Jones said. “Obviously we think a lot about Church, but he’s coming off injury. It’s not perfect, but other teams have to hang out places, too, with their cap situations. That’s where we are with it.”

The Cowboys tried the low-priced free agent approach last year when they signed Rodney Poole. But Poole failed his conditioning test at the start of training camp, fell out of favor, then was released when he was beaten out-performed by Church.

“At some point, it wouldn’t surprise me if we end up with a veteran safety, if not one in the draft as well somewhere,” Jones said. “That doesn’t mean we take one out of need. But if we see one at the right place, right time, and he fits well where it is, you’ve got to look at it.”

Can't tell if Jerry's really this dumb or it's just pre-draft bluffing.

Thats not what he said. He said "could start"

And maybe they could, but one or both of them might not even get the chance to start depending on what happens on draft day and thr remainder of free agency.

Don't get your panties in a bunch every time someone talks shit about Jerry or his retarded son. We know what the fuckin' retards are really saying.

To even think or predict that there is one or even both starting safeties already on this team is retarded logic. One is coming off an major tendon injury and the other is a fuckin' JAG.

Yeah, he also said "may get some insurance".

When has a player projected to be a starter ever been "insurance".

You get backups as "insurance".

Basically he said nothing, likely because he doesn't know yet what the team will do at that position.

I interpret this as we're drafting Kenny Vaccaro in round one.

I am a little scared our safeties are going to be barber and a recovering church.

it's going to be hard to win like that.

I'd rather that than drafting Vacarro in the first.

I see nothing but average with that guy.

I couldn't pick him out of lineup consisting of him and the cast if the jersey shore so I have no opinion on the guy.

Running barber out there as a starting safety though is terrifying to me.

It's kind of the same thing when you watch his college "highlight" videos too.

It's like Oh that receiver made a catch... and that guy tackled him real good... oh look, that receiver made a catch and that guy tackled him real good.... hey theres that guy tackling another receiver who made a catch again.

Picture watching that for four minutes with rap music in the background.

Same thought here.

Stretch Smith keeps claiming that they really do love Matt Johnson that much, though. I guess the guy was Ed Reed in the three practices he got on the field. I really hope they aren't dumb enough to count on that.

If we are to sign matt slauson I assume they wont be spending anymore resources on guards.

that means the first pick would be offensive tackle, safety or defensive tackle I guess.

Being short a pick and needing to clear out free's money I am of the opinion they will move back and take that tackle fluker and plug him in as the starter on the right side with parnell as insurance if he isnt ready.

it seems almost to a t what jerry loves to do, brag about moving back and getting more picks and finding a starter plus he will please the masses by cutting free.
