Mendez: Rob Ryan admits injuries caught up to Cowboys

In a roundabout way, Rob Ryan admits injuries caught up to Cowboys: 'Hell of a team that's banged-up'

The Cowboys were so injury-depleted on the defensive front Sunday night, they were having trouble lining up and recognizing plays, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said.

“We knew what that was going to be – a hard day,” Ryan said. “We still could have done a lot better. Could have gotten our fronts checked. We were having trouble checking our fronts. We’re a banged-up group, guys. Hell, we weren’t on point getting our checks, and you need to be against that team.”

The Cowboys gave up 274 yards on the ground to the Redskins. Robert Griffin threw for only 100 yards and ran only six times for 63 yards – reasonable totals, but effective. But rookie running back Alfred Morris had 33 carries for 200 yards.

Morris’ 1-yard touchdown run sealed the game, giving the Redskins a 10-point lead with 1:09 left. The score was set up by a roughing-the-passer penalty that wiped out a third-down incompletion. The Redskins would have had to kick a field goal.

“We thought we were in the game to the end,” Ryan said. “Questionable hit on the quarterback. Whatever. They were grabbing receivers all day, too. But that’s the way it is in this league. It was unfortunate we gave up that last touchdown because I would have liked to have seen our offense with the ball down by six and a chance to go win it.”

Ryan coached a defense that lost six starters and two backups to injury, except in the case of nose tackle Josh Brent, charged with intoxication manslaughter in the death of a teammate.

Ryan was asked if he’d like to coach a healthy defense next season.

“Please,” he said, and laughed ironically. “I’d like to do that. That’d be fun.”

He said he still thought the Cowboys were a top defense.

“It changed a little bit, obviously, by the end,” he said. “But these guys played hard. They gave us everything that they had. But there’s a hell of a football team over there that’s banged up. I know with our offense and with Jason running this thing, I mean, you know, we’re right there, guys. Everybody can see it. We want another chance to do that. But hey, we’ll see what happens.”

The rationale will be this team will be better when healthier next year, but will it. ALthough we have great talent in some areas, they dont come without injury concerns

I’d like to see him coach the defense again. I would like to see him go back to his original scheme he used in his first season. I am not sure why it was so scaled back this season, maybe Garrett wanted him to? I like his energy and passion he coaches with. They were a top 5 defense before all the injuries hit.

I have to say....

I think we do have the perfect pair of ILBs to play against RG3.

I don't think Lee or Carter are going to fall for those playfakes over and over and over again.

That was just awful, awful, awful coaching. We weren't prepared for it and did nothing to adjust. There's only one way to play the option - your end has to know who he's going to play before the snap and be committed to it and the ILBs have to know who they've got. If Demarcus has the back the ILB needs to be playing the QB, or Demarcus keeps contain and the LBs crash.

It looked like we didn't have any assignments. Rob's idea was to have our players stand there and chop their feet until they figured out who had the ball, which led to us playing passive and getting run all over. Griffin was off passing but it seemed Rob never realized it and just kept playing off and scared and never came after him. The worst defensive gameplan I've seen here in forever.

IMO. Go back to a traditional 4-3.......

So tired of this decade long crusade to get an elite 3-4 defense with all these hocus pocus schemes up and running. We've tried and failed now move on.

The game plan seemed to work early on. RG3 was having trouble finding open guys. I think a healthy Ware does a better job against the option play. It was a similar game plan that was used against Cam Newton. That option play has been burning defenses all season.

THANK YOU. And to make it worse, all this "innovative" bullshit with going small with the 3-4. Undersized DL.

Arn’t you the guy who argued with me in an entire thread about how the Redskins wouldn’t be any good this season? Personally i don’t think your observations are based on logic. Mostly emotional tantrums.

There were several defensive players who got snaps last evening who, for some reason, wore unfamiliar names on their backs.

I have little idea who some of them are and/or how they ended up in Dallas. It is almost like a pickup game.

Of course the injuries screwed the defense over.

I'm not saying this defense would have been great had they gone injury free. But there was no way they'd be able to play well with that many people who couldn't other make NFL rosters.

Too bad Rob's unit sucks when completely healthy, too.

At least the unit is more loveable when you got Starbucks baristas and forklift operators playing linebacker and safety.
