IRVING, Texas – Cole Beasley played it cool when asked about the spectacular catch he made over cornerback Teddy Williams on a deep ball Thursday.

“That’s just what you have to do in this league,” Beasley said. “(Kyle) Orton put it on the money. That’s all I can say about that one.”

We’ll say a little bit more.

It was the kind of catch that indicates that Beasley, an itty-bitty undrafted receiver out of SMU, might be more than just the stereotypical, short, white slot guy. He lined up outside, got open deep against a former NCAA sprint champion and made a twisting, leaping grab of a pass that was thrown above his outside shoulder.

“If you know how to run routes, you can beat anybody if the quarterback is as good as Kyle Orton,” said Beasley, who has tried to model his game after Wes Welker and Steve Smith. “He just puts it there. I mean quarterbacks in this league make it to where you’re open almost any time. You just have to make the play. Coaches want to see you make plays when you’re covered or not covered. So you got to do it.”

Beasley, who is listed at 5-foot-8, 177 pounds, is in the mix with the rest of the unproven receivers in camp who are competing for the No. 3 job and probably a couple of other roster spots.

He has caught the coaches’ eyes since rookie minicamp by consistently getting open and catching the ball. He’s shown over and over again that he’s capable of making the solid plays that keep the chains moving.

Beasley offered a glimpse of the spectacular Thursday.

man I hope he or someone else works out.

it would be hillarious if a small tiny white guy ends up in the slot all year after 5 years of chasing big tall guys with giant resumes.

It's easy to dismiss him, being only 5'8" and all.

When you're that small, you have to really be quick. And you need an accurate QB.

Also, Teddy Williams sucks.

It was on teddy Williams. Who? He caught the ball isn't that what he's supposed to do? They'd writing articles on single plays now?

A scrub catching a pass merits its own thread? We have low standards around here.

interesting that clarence hill quoted him as saying dont compare me to welker because I am small and white...

i just watched the interview and he never said white, he said small and quick.

he also said he is a big fan of welker and that he studied welker in the slot for years and steve smith on the edge because they are smaller guys.......

funny how the white gets inserted and the steve smith gets left out isnt it....

how do we know he is a scrub?

we will find out if he can get off the line of scrimmage in the preseason but if he is as quick and intelligent with good hands as everyone is saying about him there is no reason to call him a scrub.

a smart player who knows what he is doing as a role player is always a positive.

It could be worse. You could be a Redskins', fan that was on the ledge because they waived the injured UFDA Chase Minnifield, and now are rejoicing because he passed waivers is now on their IR. LOL.

Until proven otherwise, that's exactly what he is. Jeff Ogden made his share of acrobatic pre-season catches which amounted to .. nothing.

every year every team has a number of guys who can do everything, until people start tackling in games...

I am just saying there is really no reason to doubt he can make the team or act like he is not good enough. Plenty of guys make teams who are suprises....

Speaking of tackling, I hope that is one area that is vastly improved. No more of this shotting at the ankles. They should show plenty of film of Newman getting leaped over by the Giants' TE/FB as an example on how not to go for a tackle.

hopefully with some quicker guys and tighter coverage we will have multiple guys getting to the ball carrier like the better defenses do.

That's why I'm curious about Holmes. Normally, guys that big aren't third/slot receivers. Those jobs usually go to shorter, shiftier types.

we are all curious about holmes.

He is going to be the seconary camp story...Obviously dez is the only story anyone will talk about....and of course everyone telling spencer to fuck off will be another story..

but an actual real story will be can holmes do this...can he handle the game right now.....

I dont think he would be a slot guy by the way, he would be the third wr but I cant imagine he is in the slot, austin will play the slot when holmes is on the field.

in the past garrett has thrown the ball alot to the guy he is trying to evaluate the most in camp and in the preseason....hurd, austin and john phillips have been through that...

I think that will be holmes this year.....

Yeah but that mastermind Chan Gailey creamed his pants over and over about the guy, and thought he was good enough take reps away from Michael Irvin

Cowboys WR Cole Beasley believes he’s “quicker than everyone else out there.”

By David Moore/ Reporter
dmoore@dallasnews.com

8:47 pm on July 26, 2012 | PermalinkReceiver Cole Beasley continues to make plays.

On Thursday, the free agent rookie from SMU got behind former NCAA track champion Teddy Williams and made a nice adjustment to catch a long pass from Kyle Orton.

Head coach Jason Garrett spoke last month about how a player in Beasley’s position needs to make a play or two every practice to stay on the staff’s radar to have a chance to make the team. That is what the 5-foot-8, 177-pound receiver has done so far this off-season.

“I can’t have any days off,’’ Beasley said. “Once you show a weakness, they’re always going to talk about it because you’re a smaller guy. I’m not the prototypical size for the position. I’m way smaller than the prototypical size. But I have some strengths a lot of people don’t have.

“I have a lot of quickness. I don’t think there is anybody out there as quick as me, not just the Cowboys or anywhere else. I’m confident in my abilities to be quicker than everyone else out there.

“That is what I have to utilize.’’
