Marcus Spears is ready to help fill in for the loss of Kenyon Coleman

Defensive end Marcus Spears has seen his playing time diminish over the past five games, but the Cowboys need him again. Kenyon Coleman had season-ending surgery on his left triceps Tuesday.

"It’s tough," Spears said of losing Coleman. "He’s a heck of a football player. I think Kenyon brought that old grimy, 3-4 end, play the run, physical kind of player. He actually had some good pass rush going, too. You hate to lose him, and you know how we are on this D-line, real close. It’s a blow emotionally and to the unit, but at the end of the day, the nature of the business, we’ve all been here before. I think every guy in our room has had to miss time and other guys had to step up. It’s just an opportunity for me to go in and play and help."

Spears played 93 plays in the first four games before being a healthy scratch against Baltimore. He has played only 48 plays in the past four games, including only eight against the Eagles last week. Spears has 15 tackles, including two for loss.

Spears, a first-round pick in 2005, has made 83 starts in his career.

Rookie Tyrone Crawford, Josh Brent and Sean Lissemore, who has not played since he sprained his ankle against Baltimore, will help fill in for Coleman. The Cowboys also promoted defensive end Ben Bass from the practice squad earlier this week.

cutting Spears this off-season saves us about $1.4M in cap room. He is most likely playing his last few games in Dallas.

Coleman is a free agent and as good as gone.

2 to 3 new Defensive Linemen next season.

Did you guys know that when we drafted Spears in 2004, I was more excited about that selection than I was Ware?

I had seen a few LSU games, and Spears got after the QB.

I don't know what happened in the NFL, but he's never shown me what I saw from him in college. At first, I blamed it on Zimmer/Parcells read and react scheme. Thought he'd turn into a force under Wade's coaching. Nope.

LSU has this long-standing practice of rotating their D Linemen as much as 50 percent of the time. Spears, Dorsey, and Tyson Jackson looked like gangbusters at LSU and have been ehhh as pro's. One of the reasons I was so sceptical about Michael Brockers and next year's duo of Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo. Although Mingo's athleticism makes him special.

Spears is a really good guy and teammate from all reports so it's hard to label him a bust, but he has definitely been disappointing.

He looks a lot heavier around his midsection and his arms are smaller this year. He's never been more than just a guy here. He's definitely gone after this year.

I felt the same way as Mid about Spears, and with good reason given how explosive and athletic he was at his size.

But he's been pretty much a bust. I think he's just lazy, going back to when Parcells had to rail him as a rookie for being fat.
