Cowboys Mailbag
JIM LOUGHBOROUGH - RICHARDSON, TX: Can the Cowboys afford to pay Roy Williams that much money to be a third receiver? Should they release him, and are there veteran wide outs who would make sense here?
Rob: It's probably a non-issue because the Cowboys are on the hook for $12.9 million if Williams is cut. Think about it: if it's your money, it's better to get some production from a player, even if it's modest production, than simply not having him on the roster. The hope is a young player like Dwayne Harris can eventually step into that third receiver role.
Josh: I don't think they can afford to not have Williams on the team. Ideally you would have three good wide receivers. There's also certain amount of unknown that has to be factored in when considering Dez Bryant's place on the depth chart, so in an offseason that may not allow much time to work with Tony Romo and learn the playbook, I would tend to lean toward the guy who has been around here for a while. Remember, Roy was doing pretty well last year until Romo went out.
MICHAEL JOHNSON - BOSSIER CITY, LA: Instead of releasing Marion Barber, why not just move him to fullback? Wouldn't that create mismatches for the defense with he and Felix Jones on the field together?
Rob: I don't think he's a full-time fullback. Although he's been a physical player and a dependable blocker, he's not built like a fullback. I do think the Barber-Jones formation was a good wrinkle in the past, but you just get the sense Barber's time is up here. Shaun Chapas will get every chance to win that job.
Josh: A number of coaches have said that the wrinkle of using Barber as a fullback would not work as a full-time thing. He's just not a lead blocker. In any event, I think it's pretty obvious his time here has run its course.
