'Realistic' Jerry Jones knows Cowboys need to play better

ARLINGTON, Texas – It’s good to get any win in the NFL, but Jerry Jones knows the quality of the Cowboys’ performance against the Eagles won’t be good enough for them to accomplish their goals.

Jones will take the 38-33 win that bumped the Cowboys’ record back to .500, but the owner/general manager made a point to note that his team needs to perform better to give itself a chance to make the playoffs.

“I’m very hopeful, but I’m realistic and I know that we play teams that if we make some of the miscues that we made like we did out there tonight ...,” Jones said, the conclusion of his sentence so obvious he didn’t need to finish it. “I’m proud of the team, but we’ve really got to call on everybody and everything to do everything whether it’s a coach, whether it’s a player, whether it’s me... We’ve got to do everything we can do to get these next four ballgames.”

This victory came over an awful Eagles team that has lost eight straight games. The next four games -- at the Cincinnati Bengals, home against the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints and at the Washington Redskins -- all come against foes that have some sort of playoff hope entering the final quarter of the regular season.

There is plenty of opportunity to nitpick this win.

The Cowboys dug a double-digit home in the first half for the fifth consecutive home game. It was a dreadful performance by the Dallas defense against an offense starting rookie backups at quarterback and running back, allowing 423 total yards. The Cowboys didn’t lead until 5:35 remained in the game.

“We certainly had times in this ball game we might have looked like that we deserved or should have gotten the win, but we ended up with it,” Jones said. “It’s very important. We need to take what we’ve got here. We know how we got here.

“We need to look at these next four ballgames and take anything positive we got from here and go out here and give ourselves a chance.”

Don't pay lip service Jerry. You aren't changing, and you know it.
