@caplannfl: Cowboys released veteran G Nate Livings from IR. Signed a five-year, $18.75 M deal last season with $6.2 M guaranteed.

:towel

Always hated that guy

Holeeeee crap. That was one bad signing. I would love to see ANY reporter ask Jerry how he missed so badly on that FA signing.

I'll do the math later but has anyone seen what that does to our cap this year and next?

Unless there is some clause in his contract I can't find, this seems really stupid. He still has guaranteed money left on his deal. Had we kept him on the IR all year it wouldn't have effected our 2013 cap. By cutting him now, we take a $2.4M cap hit right now, which I think is the rest of our cap room. Plus, we take a $2.1 M cap hit in 2014.

Not sure why we did this. Hate the player but why shoot ourselves in the foot (salary cap wise) ??

Get back to work. JJ knows what he is doing.

Shut it.

The only thig I can think of is maybe because there is an injury settlement that impacts the $1.7M of guaranteed money. Everything I've ever read is that when it comes to the salary cap, guaranteed money is guaranteed and accelerates once the player is cut, traded, or retires.

According to Spotrac, $1.7 in dead money. $4 mill in cap space

I saw sportrac this morning, it's where I got my numbers. Now it's showing he's released and shows a 1.4 cap hit so I'm not sure where/how they are getting that.

Can you send me the link where you saw where it shows 4 million in cap space? or are you saying that's how much cap space the team has under the 2013 cap?

also, 1.7 was his base this year (and also how much guaranteed money we owed him). so where is 700k prorated signing bonus ?

The $2.1M he will still count in 2014 comes from that prorated bonus (700k times 3 years remaining on deal). So 700k has to count towards this year's cap no matter what. If his base wasn't guaranteed (great move Jerry) than we would get $1.7M in cap room immediately.

I recall awhile back, in BTB that if we were to cut both Livings and Bernie, we would gain about $8 million in cap space the following year.

where does he rank on the list of "worst FA signings" by Dallas?

I seem to recall some stud RT during the Parcells years who never played due to a bad knee or something

There's Bryant Westbrook, who we started on Week 1 against the Texans and then cut. We owed him his entire salary that year.

Marcellus Wiley was garbage, then he got on ESPN and bragged about all the money Jerry gave him when he was garbage.

Anthony Henry had one good year and then he was terrible after that. $12 million signing bonus IIRC.
