Jimmy Johnson warns against overconfidence before Seattle game: ‘They have to prove this week that the first game wasn’t out of character’

Fox’s Jimmy Johnson was at Valley Ranch on Thursday to chat with Tony Romo, Rob Ryan and Sean Lee for a feature on the Cowboys defense scheduled to air on Sunday’s pre-game show.

So you know, Johnson was one of the few national voices to pick the Cowboys over the Giants in the season opener.

“I thought they would be thoroughly prepared for the game,” Johnson said on his way out of Cowboys headquarters, throwing a bouquet at Jason Garrett. “I like what I see with this team over last year’s. I like the additions on defense, especially the new cornerbacks. Sean Lee is 100 percent and I like the healthy DeMarco Murray.”

Still, Johnson warned against overconfidence before Sunday’s game at Seattle.

“They have to prove this week that the first game wasn’t out of character,” he said. “That happens more than you think in the NFL. Seattle has a strong defense and a real home-field advantage with its loud fans. We’ll know a lot more about the Cowboys after this game.”

That Jimmy, pretty smart guy.

He'd be having a meltdown of epic proportions after this kind of effort today.

I'm not sure that kind of effort would have happened with Jimmy, not with this talent.

It never would be.

Coaches alone would be on notice.

But that is the difference jimmy was a head coach who oversaw everything, Garrett is a coordinator we are asking to be a head coach.

He seems to be more norv turner than jimmy, only without the results as a coordinator.

It did happen with Jimmy, with more talent.

Check the Rams game from 1992, or the Falcons game from 1993.

Of course the one that gets the most press is the game at Washington in 1992 because that's when he lost his mind on the plane.

Yeah, even very good teams have the occasional flat week. It happened during Landry's era too.

Which is not to say the current Cowboys team is a very good team or that Garrett is Landry II.

We gave way more effort against the rams in 92 from what I saw yesterday. And that was an 8-1 or 7-1 team at that point.

Not the same. It's week 2 we had a horrendous effort and after the game these guys are in the locker room talking about correcting mistakes and aww shucks we will get them next week.

Same ol stuff. I will never understand how you can not be motivated to play in week 2.

we looked like the worst team in the league yesterday outside of maybe Jacksonville.

Sad times. 14 games left and on top of wondering if the talent is good enough we now have to wonder if the team gives a shit from week to week.

And if we lose these next two what is the psyche of this team going to be at 1-4 heading into a bye.

Yeah but the difference then was those teams put a month or two of excellence together before falling flat. This team doesnt have that history behind it yet. In fact the history is we play 1 or 2 decent games and then 1 or 2 clunkers, and never get anything consistently going.

I was at the 93 loss to Atlanta, it was awful but we were missing Aikman and Emmitt got hurt early in that game (might have been the first or second series) and didnt return.
