"Jimmy Carter established a new model for what it means to be a former president and leaves and extraordinary post-presidential legacy," said Vice President Kamala Harris in her remarks at a ceremony honoring the late president at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda where he will lie in state for two days. Others delivering remarks included Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). The former president died at the age of 100 on Dec. 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia.
