Jason still trying to learn how to be a coach

INDIANAPOLIS Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett drew some attention last off-season when he and quarterback Tony Romo took a trip to Duke University to watch basketball and pick the brain of football coach David Cutcliffe.

They also attended a few SMU basketball games and Garrett had the defensive staff watch SMU coach Larry Brown work in practice.

Garrett plans to continue these so-called learning excursions this off-season in a continued quest for knowledge and to get better as a coach.

He has encouraged his coaching staff to do the same.

“Yeah, we got a few things planned,” said Garrett, while being coy about his exact destinations. “We’ll see. That’s a big part of what we do, encouraging our coaches to really be thoughtful about taking a trip. We call it, ‘one-day, learning excursions.’ I'd love to learn how to clap more effectively, for example.

“Go somewhere in football, outside of football, in town, out of town and try to spend some time with somebody who has been successful in what they do and hopefully we can learn from and come back and grow as an individual. Hopefully it helps us grow as a staff and as a football team. We’re going to do some of those things as this off-season progresses.”

All part of his "really have to look" to find out if a running game is really necessary for "championship-type teams."

All the best coaches make the best decisions at the most important times. Jason has a history of an offense that amasses great amounts of yards in the last two minutes before the half or as the game time diminishes. Still during those years the red zone efficiency was terrible and the yards/TD efficiency was low, for several years only averaging 2.3 TDs per game.

Per game.

Murray had significant yards last year and there were games where it was the coaches decisions that have cost the players of their chance to win.

This past season with all of Murray's yards, the decisions in the Detroit and Green Bay games (has Jason ever beaten the Dom Capers Packer defense?) were not reflective of an intelligent game plan or planner.

Jason could go to all the best coaches, world conquerors, and deities he wants to, only to find out that the best decision that will cause the Cowboys to win will be for him to be not in a position to make any decisions at all.
