IRVING – Despite a 3-5 record, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett says his team is not desperate.

A 19-13 loss in Atlanta last Sunday left only two NFC teams with worse records than the Cowboys, meaning a significant turnaround will have to occur for there to be any shot at a playoff berth.

Regardless, Garrett isn’t changing his message.

“A desperate football team? I wouldn’t say that at all,” Garrett said Wednesday. “You’ve heard me use the word urgent a lot around here. We believe in urgency 365 days out of the year and that’s where we are right now. We have to be urgent in our preparation on Wednesday, getting ready for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.”

The Philadelphia Eagles are currently sitting in the same 3-5 boat. Like the Cowboys, they have an NFC-leading 19 turnovers. Their first meeting of the season might just come down to who can take care of the ball better.

“I think the Eagles are an outstanding team,” Garrett said. “When I watch them on tape this is what we see, we see a lot of good players and it will be a great challenge for us. Certainly, they probably want their record to be better than it is just like we want our record to be better than it is, just like most teams around the league want their record to be better than it is. But having said that, we watch the tape, we know the team, we know the organization. They’re really well-coached. They got lot of good payers, so we understand what the challenge is this week.”

His credibility is less than zero. The guy is either in complete denial or has the integrity of a used car salesman. Not what you'd expect from a Princeton man.

I think the players are just tuning him out, or Garrett simply doesn't know how to put backbone behind his words. Either/or, that is a huge problem.

Garrett is basically saying that from here on out, it's just another day, same as an OTA and that's bad. Or that it's the same day as Doug Free and Tyron Smith collecting a bunch of penalties, or Dez running a wrong route that leads to an interception, or Ogletree body-catching another pass, etc. You get the point.

Bad all around.

The Giants can go into a mid-season tail-spin and then are able to flick on the light switch and go on a tear, while it's the same sense of urgency here, 365 mediocre days a year.

He may not feel desperate but ask any knowledgeable Cowboys fans how desperate we are to have a respectable winning football team again in our lifetime.

Your urgency is not working. Maybe you should try desperation.

Jason, we both know that if we lose that game, we're definitely not making the playoffs--which are a long-shot to begin with

"Desperation" has a negative connotation just short of hopelessness such as "we need a win".

"Urgency" implies a heightened desire to get things going such as "I can't wait to go after this win".

One is just a prettier way of saying you're up shits creek than the other.

In reality, this team should be as desperate as possible. Desperation is the recognition that you have everything to lose.

Urgency is the acknowledgement that you have everything to gain.

Put two guys into a fight where Guy A is told he will get nothing if he wins but he will be executed on the spot if he loses. Guy B is told he doesn't have to worry about the penalty of death but he'll get a nice paycheck if he wins.

I'll take the dude who's gonna die if he doesn't win that fight.

I don't question that there's talent on this team, but I do question that this team isn't smart enough to win. Why do they constantly make mistakes in games?

You can't win in this league like that. Too many turnovers and mental mistakes are keeping us from winning ball games.

There's talent 1-20. 21-53 is pretty average to bad.

Also, the roster is littered with guys who are either injury prone, or at least not strangers to the trainers table.

Two of our best players (Murray & Lee) have more injuries in their careers than they do rushing yards and tackles, respectively.

There's no accountability on this team. I like what the Falcons do in calling players to the front of the team when they're reviewing game tape and someone commits a penalty. Players commit penalties here and it's business as usual. They commit the same stupid penalties or have the same mental errors game after game after game after game. Nothing changes. You know why? Because Garrett has no business being a coach in the in the NFL in any capacity. Until we get a real head coach in here with real assitants, the same thing will continue to happen.

Yeah, but if the new head coach doesn't have any power then it doesn't matter.
