How the Cowboys drafted — and lucked — their way into one of NFL's best o- lines

The line could have been greatly improved during that draft if the Mo trade didn't happen. SilverBear and me argued that entire draft day about the subject. He thought it was a great trade up of course .

Yeah, I disliked that trade too. I thought the Cowboys had too many holes to devote a first and second round pick to any single player. I was in the DeCastro chorus and believed that Cowboys needed to invest heavily in their OL.

My source (seriously, a radio guy who covered the team for decades) always said the real driving force behind drafting Tyron was Houck.

Ummm..hello? I told you fuckers this, BEFORE the draft. Bow down to my internet greatness now and give me my props!

I actually spoke with Houck at a USC practice. He was gushing about Smith.

How so?

They reportedly were going to take Brockers and Wagner

They could have got at least two starting olinemen out of that draft, maybe three. It just depended on Jerry wanting to fix the line at that time:

But they said who they were gonna draft had they not made the trade, and neither of them were OL's

I don't think anyone is questioning what Jerry and company would have done. This is more about what we would have liked them to do.

Does that change the fact that the players were available snd the team had the picks to take them. I never said that Jerry wanted to fix the line. I said it could have been done in that draft. The line should have been addressed in that draft. It was a major problem at that time. It was a mistake to trade up in that draft. I was pissed the second that it was announced.

That Fat Rob for that. He was on the table for CB's

I agree that ultimately it wasn't a good trade up though, but in their defense the pass defense was epic bad the year before. We couldn't cover anyone and Ryan needed CB';s to run his style of defense.
