Jerry Jones: Romo-friendly offense needs to be Romo better; maximize his skills like the Skins and RG3

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the charge for the coaches this offseason is to take the offense from “Tony Romo friendly” to “Romo better”.

Considering that Romo attempted more passes the past two years combined than any quarterback in Cowboys history, he is already the biggest part of the offense.

But Jones said they need to find a better way and more efficient way to use his skills since they have nothing to show for his current usage in terms of playoff success.

"He has had some success with it," Jones said. "But it hasn't got us where we want to go. So the change up is how do we use him better? Have we maximized everything that he is about to get it done? Those are the challenges we've got in the off season."

Jones acknowledged that the offense may have grown stale under coach Jason Garrett and is counting on the added influence of offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Bill Callahan to allow the Cowboys to get the most of Romo's unique improvosational skills, similar to how the Redskins maximize their use of Robert Griffin III.

Jones said it's a must schematically because of the financial commitment he is making.

“I think that is fair,” Jones said. “I think when you get to back to back two years the kind of play we got from Tony we have to count on when we make the kind of commitment that we make to him, allocate the kind of part of our team salaries that we do and the position that he plays. This thing has got to be oriented toward his skills and we got to be able to take advantage of all the things he does best. Nobody knows better than Tony, one and Jason and (quarterbacks coach) Wade (Wilson) and that offensive staff. But I expect to see some of the same kind of things you are talking about there. (The Redskins) took advantage of RG's special skills. I'm necessarily talking about mobility as much as I am they took advantage of his unique skills. Tony sees remarkably. He sees the cars on the highway so to speak. He reacts well on what he sees. And he is real good at taking his eye away from it and going back to it and throwing to it. Those are really unique skills. We ought to be winning with that. We ought be trying to win that. I think we will be. If we don't utilize that and he is just a step off of or just two steps ahead of what the next guy can do then it’s a misuse of that resource. He has got to have that prominent role of what we are doing because he has got that prominent role in what we are doing financially."

Again, what is Garrett doing that is allowing him to keep his job?

Now the owner is calling his offense stale and has changed the staff up.

I don't get it, why is he still here? This whole year is just going to be a waste that hopefully gets us a solid veteran head coach next season.

I really feel like this is SB or bust year for Garrett.

If he fails.... then he's canned and we roll in either Lovie Smith or Jon Gruden.

If it's Lovie Smith, then I'd expect Norv Turners brother to be his OC.

So is Jerry trying to motivate the Dallas press or something, ' not Romo friendly, but Romo better.' Wtf?

Jerry said it all about our approach to this year. It's cute how he continually believes that his squad is close.

Way to put Tony on notice, Jerry. Your constant coddling will no doubt light a fire under him.

I love how our shitty GM who shouldn't be in his position is calling out our shitty coach who shouldn't be in his position.
