No decision yet on playcalling but Garrett seems to be leaning towards becoming walk around coach

For the record, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said nothing has changed regarding his decision on who will call plays in 2013.

He is still going through the process and no final decision has been made about turning play-calling duties over to offensive offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Bill Callahan.

But the more Garrett talked about the subject and the responsibilities of being a full-time head coach and a full-time playcaller you got the feeling that he will not have both jobs in 2013.

Garrett said he has consulted with other coaches on the subject and seems to believe that being a walk around head coach and giving up play calling duties is "the better way of things."

"Again the stuff we talked about a number of times before the job of a head coach is a significant one with a lot of responsibilities," Garrett said. "The job of an offensive coordinator play caller is a significant one with a lot of responsibilities. And I understand it because I have been doing it for the last two and half years. There is a reason that 28 of the 32 head coaches don’t do it. But there are some compelling examples as to why you do do it. It's been something that has been relatively successful for us. It has been successful for some other teams in this league. There are good arguments on both sides of it. But again they are two very significant jobs with a lot of responsibility and the more you delegate and give other guys responsibilities and still get the result you want I think that’s a better way to do things."

I hope he walks out of the stadium and onto the freeway.

I could see him doing it too.

No wonder Jerry loves this guy so much. Same way of speaking a lot of words but saying nothing.

I know it's embarrassing for him to have playcalling yanked, but for God's sake, just tell us who is calling the plays. We still going to be doing this "still working through it" BS when training camp starts?

It's the same reason the idiot fans elsewhere on the internet suck his cock.

Because they think he sounds coach-ey. He uses alot of buzzwords and is well groomed and never says shit. So they're all like omg Landry 2.0

No doubt SP...

But really now, what is the advantage to all this cloak and dagger stuff? Are we really going to have to wait for that Canton game to see which coach puts the playsheet in front of his mouth before every play?

The longer you put it off, the more questions you're going to get about it. Why not just say, "Here's the way it is" and get it over with?

Or do like Parcells and just say, "I'm calling plays. I'm gonna get the blame for it anyway."

Honestly it just feels like a saving face move.

Like, Jerry wants to strip him of it, and he agreed to it, but asked to do it this way so it looks like it was his idea.

Sounds like Garrett still wants to call plays
By Dan Graziano | ESPNDallas.com

PHOENIX -- Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday that nothing has changed with regard to the decision on whether he'll continue to call the team's offensive plays in 2013. Garrett has been the playcaller on offense since before he was head coach and has said in the past that he didn't want to give up those duties. But there has been much discussion about the team making such a change this offseason, and for a while it appeared team owner Jerry Jones was set to either bring in a playcaller or hand the duties over to offensive line coach Bill Callahan.

That hasn't happened, however, and it certainly seems as though Garrett is resisting:

"The job of a head coach is a significant one with a lot of responsibilities," Garrett said. "The job of an offensive coordinator/play-caller is a significant one with a lot of responsibilities. And I understand it because I have been doing it for the last two and half years. There is a reason that 28 of the 32 head coaches don’t do it. But there are some compelling examples as to why you do do it. It's been something that has been relatively successful for us."

I have to think this is more about organizational control, however, and Garrett not wanting to give up the degree of that control he currently possesses. There are strong indications, their denials notwithstanding, that the changes made to the coaching staff this offseason were made by Jones and not Garrett. The Cowboys' coach may be trying to fight off a public perception that he has no say in how his team is run, and holding onto play-calling duties could be a line in the sand for him.

I think it's possible that ridding himself of play-calling duties could be a good thing for Garrett and make him a better head coach. He seems to be doing the head-coach part of his job well. He has the respect of his players and control of the locker room, and the Cowboys held together through a great deal of adversity in 2012 to contend for the division title until the final day of the season. Handing over play-calling duties to someone else he trusts could help him continue to flourish in his other role.

However, one of the key issues is whether Callahan's the man for the job. He has his hands full already with a messy offensive line that needs improvement and might yet add a couple of key pieces before the start of the season. The performance of last year's offensive line wasn't exactly promotion-worthy, either. Change for change's sake isn't usually a good thing, and if this is a change the Cowboys plan to make, I think they need to consider what they gain from it before pushing ahead.

He probably should be a walk around coach or else he's likely to get his walking papers if another mediocre offense leads the team to a mediocre record.

16-16, with consecutive 3rd place finishes in the division AND missed playoffs. Averaging 10 points in the first half, and only ONCE scoring more than that in one game. This is with Romo, Witten, Murray, and Bryant.

And you call it success.

lol

What a pompous ass. "There's a reason you don't do it, but I'm doing it. Success."

With the exception of Mike McCarthy of the Packers, no other HC in the playoffs did the playcalling---offensive or otherwise. To me that's more telling.

McCarty has a Super Bowl ring, so obviously he gets a pass. Garrett... you haven't even put together a winning season... but it's success nonetheless.

I think Garrett has Jerry snowed by stats. Like Clinton on SNL saying that Arkansas was third in the nation in the outbreak of Rickets.

The reason that it isn't done is you lose sight of the big picture when you do that. While you're hurriedly drawing up a play because your offense stalled and you need a 1st on 3rd down; the clock could be getting away from you because you're so involved in only one aspect of coaching.

Some guys can do it because they've mastered the complexities of their certain area of expertise; that they can see the answer right away and still be aware of everything else that is going on. Garrett is not the genius offensiver charlatan that the homers would have you believe, he can't do that. He needs a think-tank that already is figuring out what the next move is going to be.

I'm not necessarily saying that Callahan is an offensive wizard either. But at least the responsibility of the whole team does not rest on him.
