Semper Fi to my Dad who's watching from above.
Ditto. Although my dad probably watching from hell. The streets there need guarding too.
Imagine what was going through his mind in -35 degree darkness, wounded and virtually surrounded by Chinese troops at the Chosin reservoir, and hearing a gruff voice exclaim, "retreat, hell! We're advancing in the other direction!" Having lied about his age to enlist, recruiting his aunt Minnie to vouch as his mother... And now he's just turned 17 and is really in the shit.
He'd landed at Incheon as part of the brilliance of General MacArthur invading more than 100 miles behind enemy lines and swiftly cutting across the entire peninsula isolating the NKA from any hope of resupply or retreat, as US forces had broken the Pusan perimeter and crushed the NK regulars between them. And then, the march North all the way to the Yalu river, crushing the enemy army for good. Just then, in flood a quarter million Chinese...
And now my future dad and the 1st Marines with air help from the VMF-214 Blacksheep and their mighty Corsairs, fight their way to rescue... My dad's assignment? Mine their back trail to inhibit enemy persuit. He's a Demolition Specialist along with a Lieutenant with small squad, they stayed behind advancing much more slowly, setting mines and booby traps as they went... "War is hell and the other side started it."
Salute. Semper Fi.
