321: Will there be a game changing player available when the cowboys pick and will garrett be as hesitant to play young players as wade was?

Rick Gosselin: You win championships with the players you select in the top 10. That's where you find the bluest of blue chippers. I'd be disappointed if the Cowboys didn't find a cornerstone player there this April. Garrett had a chance to play his youngsters in December and didn't. I'd have given Barry Church and Sam Young a start or two in the final month. The Eagles started six rookies in the finale -- and that doesn't include their top two picks, DE Brandon Graham and FS Nate Allen, who are both on injured reserve. The game was meaningless for both sides and the Eagles got to look at their youngsters. The Cowboys didn't. It's clear it's an organizational philosophy to play veterans over youngsters. I think that's one of the fundamental problems with the Cowboys. Everyone in the league is playing young guys except Dallas. New England could be going to the Super Bowl with one of the youngest defenses in the NFL. Tampa Bay won 10 games this season even though the Bucs started 10 different rookies.

DRW1961: Are the pieces going to be available in this draft for the Cowboys to make a significant improvement - provided they draft "smartly" - or is it a talent-light draft?

Rick Gosselin: There is no such thing as a bad draft -- only bad drafters. The good organizations can find players in every round of every draft. This year is no different. I think if all the juniors come out, as expected, it will be an above average draft. But it amazes me each year the players who aren't drafted that come in and play. Arian Foster was undrafted in 2008 and won a rushing title in 2009. LeGarratte Blount was undrafted this year and rushed for a thousand yards for the Bucs. Blair White, whom I mentioned above, was undrafted and caught five touchdown passes in the half season he played with the Colts. There are plenty of quality young players to go around. The good organizations find them.

Mark: Hey Rick, I'm not completely sold on Garrett, but there really isn't much choice, is there? Is he the best there is, or the best available?

Rick Gosselin: I've said a couple times in recent weeks, if I had a choice between Jason Garrett and Bill Cowher, I'd take Cowher. Jerry Jones owed it to his fan base -- a fan base that's being asked to pay upwards of $100,000 for PSLs and $300 for game tickets -- to interview the best possible candidates for the job as head coach of the Cowboys. If Jones didn't talk to Cowher and Jim Harbaugh, he has short-changed his fans. Maybe Garrett is the best candidate -- but you won't know unless you talk to them all. Then make your decision. Jerry locked in on Jason Garrett the moment he fired Wade. I think Garrett has the makings of a fine head coach. But these next few years are going to be a learning experience for him. If the Cowboys are, in fact, all about winning Super Bowls, Jones probably would have gone after a more experienced head coach that gives him a better chance of winning now.

Tito: Any free agents that the Cowboys are going to be targeting?

Rick Gosselin: With no collective bargaining agreement in place between players and owners, it's hard to pin down what group of players that will be available. In the next CBA, will the players receive their freedom after four, five or six years? Until we have an outline of the new CBA, it's tough to pinpoint what's going to be available in free agency. But I wouldn't sign any free agent in his 30s. If you're going to spend money, spend it on players with gas left in the tank.

Guest: What do you think about getting Champ Bailey at corner? We also need a left guard in free agency for Colombo. And we need a running back in the draft.

Rick Gosselin: Champ Bailey will be 33 next season. His best years are behind him. I said this back in 2003 when the Cowboys let Emmitt Smith go -- look at the ability of the player, not the name of the player. The Emmitt Smith the Cowboys released was not the same Emmitt Smith who was winning rushing titles. And the Champ Bailey of 2011 is not the same Champ Bailey who led the NFL with 10 interceptions in 2006. Young players make you better. Old players make you older.

Drew: For Todd Bowles, is the job at Dallas that much better than at Miami? Do you think he believed the interview for head coach was real?

Rick Gosselin: I think Todd Bowles was interviewing for the defensive coordinator position. If your task as a coach is to find a way to defeat Tom Brady, you're better off coaching in Dallas than in Miami.

pitlover: What do you think the odds of Jerry trading down regardless of player availability just too save money.

Rick Gosselin: Every time you trade down you leave a better player on the table. The Cowboys need blue-chip players and you get them high in the draft. Trading out of the Top 10 makes no sense this year. The Cowboys need quality, not quantity.

cowboysfan4life: Goose, r we (the fans) suppose to be excited that J Garrett went 5-3 dwn the stretch? Yes i know he had Dallas playing harder but they beat Det and Wash who r not tht good, Philly JV team, and the Giants and Colts. I'm not sold on him as a HC yet. Are you?

Rick Gosselin: There has to be a philosophical change for me to get excited about the Cowboys. We've watched them try to win championships for the past decade or so with older, name players. It's time for the Cowboys to start developing their own young stars instead of trading for them (Roy Williams, Joey Galloway, Jon Kitna) and signing them in free agency (Leonard Davis, Terrell Owens, Keith Brooking, Eddie George, Terry Glenn). I get the impression the Cowboys fear youth. The NFL has become a young man's game. The Cowboys need to do a better job drafting and developing their own young players if they want to compete again for championships.

djt1: Garrett knows the drill at Valley Ranch and now as HC, how does he expect to produce a winner when everything else remains the status quo? Jerry is a coach killer. Why is he willing to gamble his coaching career?

Rick Gosselin: There are only 32 of these jobs in the world. Every coach who accepts an NFL head-coaching position thinks he has the ability to turn a bad situation into a good one. Garrett also would be becoming head coach of the highest profile team in the NFL. He's on the ultimate football high wire. His successes will be magnified, as will his failures. Garrett envisions success.
