George: Why I'd never put an expiration date on Cowboys TE Jason Witten
By Brandon George

Brandon George recently held a chat to talk all things Dallas Cowboys. Here are some highlights:

Question: How many more years are you giving Jason Witten? Love the guy, but you gotta imagine the end is near, no?

George: I would never put an expiration date on Jason Witten. He's been an overachiever from Day 1. He has two more years left on his contract. I think he'll play longer, at least another few years after that. I certainly wouldn't doubt the man.
Question: Best O-line, #4 overall pick RB, elite receiver, great QB, reliable TE... Of all the starpower, what's the biggest concern you have on offense?

George: That Tony Romo and Dez Bryant return to form. The Cowboys' success on offense will hinge this year on if Romo and Dez look like Romo and Dez after dealing with multiple injuries a year ago.

Question: Is Terrance Williams secure as the #2 receiver or is Brice Butler going to give him a run for his money?

George: As Jason Garrett says, it's all open competition in training camp. But, he hasn't done anything yet to lose the job and Brice Butler would have to have a big camp and preseason to take over the No. 2 WR job.

Question: Are Carr and Claiborne just going to keep switching sides all season long or is one of them better at a particular side?

George: They maintain it's no big deal they're switching sides, but you're seeing Claiborne more on the left and Carr on the right. And I think that could be the case during the regular season, too, instead of the opposite as it has been.

Witten has a few more years after his two year deal is up? No way. I'm afraid the end is pretty near.

Witten

2016 - $6.5M base salary + 2.112M prorated bonus = $8.612M cap hit
2017 - $7.4M base salary + 2.112M prorated bonus = $9.512M cap hit

If he retired or was cut after this year, it would free up $7.4M in cap room for 2017. My guess is he takes a paycut or they restructure. He'll get some, if not all of his $7.4M 2017 base as a restructure bonus, bring his 2017 cap number way down from $9.512M, and the team will take a dead cap hit in 2018 for half of whatever the restructure bonus is.

After we go 19-0 and win the super bowl this yr, both Witten and Romo will ride off into the sunset
