Source: TE Geoff Swaim suffered a Jones fracture in his right foot. Screw inserted. Will be out 2-3 months. Similar to Dez Bryant injury.

Cowboys TE Geoff Swaim has foot surgery after workout injury

Todd Archer
ESPN Staff Writer

FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys tight end Geoff Swaim is likely out until training camp because of foot surgery this week, sources told ESPN.

Swaim suffered the injury in informal workouts this week at The Star. Players are allowed to work out at the team's facility but cannot have contact with coaches. The Cowboys coaches are off this week. Upon learning of the injury, head coach Jason Garrett refused to comment directly, opting instead to flash his trademark creepy grin and clap incessantly. Swaim had a screw inserted into his foot to help secure the bones and will likely be held out until the team leaves for training camp in Oxnard, California, in July.

Swaim missed the final seven games last season because of a torn pectoral tendon that required surgery. That injury has healed fine and he can continue to build up strength as he recovers from the foot operation.

Last season Swaim handled the No. 2 tight end duties behind Jason Witten with James Hanna missing the year with a knee injury. He caught six passes for 69 yards but was an effective blocker in the Cowboys' two-tight end sets.

Hanna is continuing to recover from his knee surgery in the middle of last season but should be ready for training camp if not sooner. The Cowboys also like the potential of Rico Gathers, a sixth-round pick who spent last season on the practice squad after a standout basketball career at Baylor.

Both Swaim and Hanna will be ready for training camp so this is a non-story, basically. Unless it's trending towards Swaim being a brittle player.

Non contact injuries always make think a player is brittle or blown up 40 or 50 pounds over what their frame can handle on PEDS.

Time to attempt to draft #82's replacement for the 10th draft in a row

I'm sure the 28th pick will net us another TE that just can't cut it and never lives up to his hype

Swaim was such an unnecessary pick and a wasted trade. Swaim is totally a Garrett family adoration. When these idiots finally leave the team, the immediate upgrade will be that these "experts" in TEs and WRs will no longer handcuff the team to players they don't use or players that shouldn't be on the team at all.

I didn't like forking over a draft pick for him, but the drop-off from him to Escobar last year was severe.

No hate from me. I think he has developed nicely, especially as a blocker. Just wish he could stay healthy.

It's not that he's horrible, but he's just okay. Just another JAG player. This injury doesn't mean much.

We should feel fortunate that something like this doesn't happen to a truly important player.

I saw a mock draft from some "expert" on NFLN, that had us taking the Ole Miss TE at 28....

It's really that he was unnecessary and there were greater needs on the roster AND he was probably going to be a UDFA (and there was a rumor that he was going to be pursued by another team so Jerry was manipulated again - LaFleur) AND why were we trading away picks for a blocking TE (playing in a total of 11 college games with 13 receptions) and expecting a receiving TE. They had Witten still playing and Hanna and really the amount of reps that Witten gets, why such draft trade haste for a college TE with 13 more receptions than I have.

Someone fell in love with this player and needed to get him. Even with Rico, when the team needs defense, Garrett pursues a TE.
Is Swaim going to outplay Witten? Is Swaim fast? Does he stretch the field or is he a red zone specialist?

Nope nope nope and nope.

It was just another 2009er. Dumb idea and a wasted pick.

He was already a blocker. We don't need blockers. Remember "with that O-line" unless something is not going as planned that the TEs have to stay in and block. Run blocking is fine. What we need is speed or freaks? Swaim was and is nothing.

Funny that Joe Looney had to come in and play the blocking TE position after Swaim got injured last year. A lineman who shows no threat at all to be in on a passing play. They essentially showed their hand on those plays instead of trusting another TE to do what Swaim had.
