Garrett says it's still worth it for Cowboys to have patience with Matt Johnson

The Cowboys held safety Matt Johnson out of Tuesday’s OTA practice, but he appears close to being ready to work again, and the Cowboys remain willing to wait on him to get healthy.

“Our attitude is to try to give him an opportunity to show us what he can do,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We feel like what he’s done up to this point is worthy of us having some patience with him.”

Johnson has hardly been healthy since the Cowboys drafted him in the fourth round in 2012. He has been slowed by hamstring injuries so much that he has hardly practiced. He managed to get on the field for the preseason opener last year but then suffered an ankle injury just a few plays in.

This year, he began the offseason and OTAs healthy, but last week, another hamstring injury sidelined him.

“The interesting thing about Matt is that every time we’ve given him an opportunity, he seems to do a pretty good job, whether it’s in practice or some of the scrimmage situations that he’s been in,” Garrettt said. “He just needs time on task. He needs to get out there. It seems to me that he’s got a real good appraoch mentally. He continues to work. He doesn’t seem outwardly frustrated; I’m sure he is. But he’s just got to continue to work through it, get himself healthy. We’re going to try to give him every chance to show us what he can do.”

Garrett said the Cowboys won’t hesitate to move on if necessary in the case of injured players. But with Johnson, that time has not come.

“We’ll continue to be patient, make sure he gets healthy, and when the times comes, see if he can compete for one of these jobs,” Garrett said.

Sure, he is worth wasting another year or two if he is as good as homers claim he is.

He doesn't take up any cap space (and because he's been hurt since he got here, he doesn't even take up a roster spot)

Its worth it to wait and see what he can do on the field. If he cant stay healthy this yr in training camp, I'm sure he'll be gone.

By what they are saying it sounds like this year is his last chance to prove that he can play.
