Former DC mayor Marion Barry fires on Daniel Snyder
The Washington Redskins defeated the New York Giants twice this season, something the New England Patriots were not able to achieve once in two meetings, least of all in the biggest game of the year.
That had one longtime Redskins fan stewing.
Leave it to Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post to unearth this one. Marion Barry Jr., the former longtime mayor of Washington D.C., came out firing at Redskins owner Daniel Snyder by way of his personal Twitter account.
“DAN SYNDER SUCKS,” wrote Barry, who currently serves as a city council member in the city's 8th Ward. Yes, Barry spelled the man's last name wrong. But hey, that can happen to the best of us.
That was just one of a series of messages Barry fired off now 20 years since the last Super Bowl appearance by the Redskins. Barry is a controversial figure who used to be a big hitter politically, at least on the local scene. He served as mayor in D.C. from 1979 to 1991 when he was brought down by the FBI after he was videotaped smoking crack cocaine in January 1990. He rebounded, though, to become mayor again from 1995 to 1999. Since, he's been a much smaller figure on the D.C. scene but has a loyal following.
In reading his posts, Barry is particularly upset that the Redskins have vacated D.C. where they formally played at R.F.K. Stadium. That, however, cannot be blamed on Snyder. Former owner Jack Kent Cooke moved the team to Landover, Md., and in fact named what is now FedEx Field after himself. Following Cooke's death, Snyder purchased the franchise.
