Falcons release RT Tyson Clabo - we had interest in him a few years ago IIRC

‏@evansilva 14m Shows how inferior RTs are viewed by NFL teams. Only 1 right tackle (Doug Free) makes over $7M annually. 14 left tackles make over $7M/year.

:lol :lol :lol

Laugh the pain away

in fairness he was a left tackle when we paid him that.

Yeah, but how much would Andre Smith cost us? He won't come cheap. He's still 26 years old and was a former 6th overall draft pick.

Andre Smith may have to take a one year deal. When you get to this point of the offseason and are unsigned it certainly gives me the indication that he may not be as well thought of in NFL circles.

The point is that they have options.

No reason to go into 2013 with Free at RT.

True, and no one hated the deal when it was signed. Still... just depressing.

I'd like to see that list of 14. I'd bet there's a fair amount of shit on there. I doubt there are 14 LTs in the league worth 7 mil per.

Believe me I don't question that Free is a piece of shit. And as far as options go they might have to turn to the draft if we can't afford Smith or now Clabo who'll be a June 1st cut.

It does make sense though to sign a guy like Winston or Smith. Then when June 1st comes cut that bum Free loose. Draft Warmack or Cooper at 18 and our OL is looking a whole lot better.

The thing that I find fairly amazing is that we have not been able to properly replace Kosier. I vastly underrated him and wish we could find another like him.

You are not alone. Many underrated Kosier. He was an excellent addition.

Atlanta has to release their rt so they can pay their quarterback?

seems odd. broaddus said yesterday makes sense and what he has said about free in the past makes sense.

There is no free agent money out there, teams are not spending so guys are getting 1 year deals. He made the point that if he was free's agent and could see the writing on the wall he would go to the cowboys and take a pay cut to stay here other wise he will be out there among the rest of the free agents chasing a small amount of dollars.

and he said on Winston that he is going to be an after the draft guy with a 1 or 2 year deal type of situation if u don't get what u want in the draft.

would be interesting if free would take a big pay cut and stay as the swing guy and we drafted a young tackle.

You can make the case that it was kosier, columbo and romo that changed this franchise.

Kosier had the intelligence and ability, columbo brought the blue collar tough guy attitude and romo has all the tools and is a blue collar guy.

Kosier was a great signing, one of the best of the past decade. Thank you brian gaine for columbo and kosier.

btw, I saw broaddus the other day was sent a tweet saying that columbo wants the team to take warmack and he responded I don't care what he thinks.

I figure he doesn't like the guy because he was a brian gaine deal and I bet it had a lot to do with parcells firing him. Broaddus is very petty about such things.

Cutting Free right now would somehow be an exact wash if these numbers are right (off sportrac).
His 2013 Cap hit is $10,020,000.($7,000,000 base + $2,060,000 pro-rated signing bonus + $960,000 pro-rated 2012 restructure bonus)

Cutting him now would create an accelerated bonus hit of $10,020,000. He has 3 years left of his pro-rated signing bonus of $2,060,000 ($6,180,000) and 4 years left of the pro-rated restructure bonus (2012) of $960,000 ($3,840,000).

$6,180,000 + $3,840,000 = $10,020,000

I think when I mentioned a few months earlier I didn't have access to the restructure bonus info. So cutting him now was apparently never an option.

June 1 cut would free up $7M in June and give us a dead money hit of $7.008M in 2014. (If still on the team in 2014 his cap hit will be $11,020,000).

So the reason I'm throwing all of these numbers out is because if they wanted to, the Cowboys could use some or most of the cap room (around $5M) created by Romo's deal to sign an Andre Smith, Eric Winston, or Tyson Clabo and then still have plenty of money (Doug Free's June 1 cut) to sign draft picks.

Any of those 3, plus Warmack/Cooper in the 1st OR Warford/Kyle Long in the 2nd would go a long way in turning a weakness into a strength.
