Four Injured Players Expected Back Soon

The Cowboys began camp with two players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and two on the Active Non-Football Injury (NFI) list. They've since lost another to injury, but four of the five are expected to be be in practice before long.

"We have a couple of players that should be back pretty soon," Phillips said. "Martellus Bennett did a lot of running today, he's close to being ready and Lorenzo Washington is the same way. As soon as tomorrow afternoon for those guys."

Bennett had sprained his ankle during a personal workout, landing himself on NFI. The undrafted rookie defensive lineman Washington tweaked his hamstring near the end of the Cowboys' summer workouts for rookies.

Phillips said supplemental seventh-round defensive tackle Josh Brent should be back in a few days after his broken fourth metacarpal (hand) settles with no serious swelling. Brent will return with sturdy protection on the hand.

Fourth-round safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah has about a week to go before he returns. He had missed all of summer Organized Team Activities and minicamp after spring shoulder surgery.

"He's doing well," Phillips said. "Conditioning-wise we still want to make sure he's there and then strength-wise. He actually had a slight (hamstring) pull, and that's part of what's setting him back, it's not as much his shoulder."

Linebacker Stephen Hodge faces an uncertain timetable in his return from microfracture knee surgery in 2009.

If Hodge misses most of training camp he'll probably be cut.

I don't see him mending his wounds for another season.
