Drew Pearson: Terence Newman is the only player in the secondary worth keeping

Former Cowboys wide receiver Drew Pearson joined the Ben and Skin radio show Monday and discussed which Cowboys player are on the bubble of making the team's roster next season.

Wide receiver Roy Williams, guard Leonard Davis, tight end Martellus Bennett, tackle Marc Colombo and running back Marion Barber were among the offensive players Pearson mentioned.

Williams received the majority of focus from the former wide receiver, who said: "He still has way too many drops. I think Roy can improve if they change up his routes. He keeps running the same routes over and over. And if I can see that, you can see that, you think those defensive backs can't see that? He's either going up the sideline on a fly or a quick slant. And that's it. If he'd run some different routes, even a slant and go might work, I think that would improve Roy.

"But I didn't know what his contract situation was or how much he would cost the Cowboys if they did let him go, but a $12 million hit against that cap? You got to keep him."

When Pearson discussed the defensive side of the ball he mentioned that Terence Newman would be the only player in the secondary that he would definitely keep.

"At this point, I think everyone else is expendable," he said. "And the reason is because Newman is experienced there. And when he's healthy he's pretty good. When I look at some of these other cornerbacks in the league, even the ones that made the Pro Bowl, they're not that much better than him."

Pearson also believes the safeties played poorly and that they need to be more aggressive going forward.

"Our safety run support is terrible," he said. "Our safety support on deep passes is terrible. We had more big plays hit on us this year than any other year of the Dallas Cowboys.

"A lot of that had to do with the safety not covering up, not being deep."

Pearson views Newman as a player that could make a successful move to free safety in the future, using his experience to quarterback the defensive unit.

And a few of those deep plays happened because of Newman. Come on Pearson. Enough with the homerism. NOBODY should be safe on defense. The back four should ALL be gone.

I wouldn't be opposed to trading some of them for different players.

We won't get much for Ball, he needs to go back to corner for depth.

Trade Newman and Jenkins, replace Sensabum and draft another safety to replace Ball.

I'd take a Champ Bailey for two seasons, and Jonathan Joseph, Erik Weddle and Rahim Moore over what we have any day.

I lost faith in everything Pearson says when he suggests Newman could be a free safety.

I don't want to see Newman at safety either, for Christ sakes find another real safety.

If Jerry gets wind of this he'll put him there.

I thought I already replied to this but maybe I didn't...

I would keep Scandrick and Jenkins around next year to see if a new staff helps them recover the talent we thought they had.

That's the shaky part about it. We know Jenks can play. Maybe it is the coaching and then if Dallas gets rid of him and he succeeds someplace else? What a gamble.

And , I'll say it, I miss Roy E. Williams. lol. Bummer about that guy.

You don't trade Jenkins after 3 years. Typical knee-jerk.

Jenkins just needs a coach who'll keep after him every day for like 8 months. Scandrick needs to stay in a zone and there's just no help for Newman.
