Does Josh Brent deserve an extension?

He's been playing well this year. I really don't think the team missed Ratliff at all during his time out. And it was Brent blowing up the pocket that led to Cam Newton throwing that end zone interception.

Josh Brent still destroying run plays. Very quickly, opponents are learning you can't block him with 1 guy.

I don't know what his contract status is. But I know we "stole" him in the 7th round of the Supplemental draft. I'd want to say it was three years ago? Maybe two. So his deal should be up soon.....

Shouldn't we extend him now at a relatively cap friendly deal - similar to how we did Lissemore earlier this year?

And does his strong play change your mind about needing to draft a huge NT in the draft?

I'd do it now if he'd go for it. It has to be cheap, of course, but I'd think he'd go for that as a 7th rounder who hasn't made much to date.

He either signed for 3 or 4 years after we took him in the supp draft.

I think he's definitely worthy of an extension. Good solid young player.

He's under contract for 2013. He will be an unrestricted free agent in 2014 (due to the new 4-year rule in the last CBA).

Nope. This team hands out too many extensions too early. Make a few good plays and you're a Cowboy for the next 5 years.

No. We overpay decent players enough as it is. Let him play out his contract, if he deserves an extension then give it to him. If he wants to much let him walk. We can find another Josh Brent, I'm fairly confident.
