Alot of people wondered how he got hurt or if he were actually injuried when we signed him, this is the first thing I've seen reference how he got hurt (and it was during drills here)

Mackenzy Bernadeau still hasn't been cleared to run. The offensive lineman isn't sure when he'll reach that milestone.

But he's working on his upper-body strength and studying the playbook so he can challenge for a starting job in training camp.

"You've got a trauma coming in the first few weeks with a new team,'' said Bernadeau, who underwent hip surgery two months after signing with the Cowboys as a free agent. "That's kinda tough.

"But I'm confident in my ability, I'm confident in my rehab and the training staff we have here and I'm very familiar with the offense. I'm just excited to get healthy and get back in as soon as possible.''

Bernadeau slipped and fell while running a drill at Valley Ranch. He experienced a sharp pain in his hip that never went away. He underwent surgery to repair his labrum and hip flexor in mid-May, a procedure expected to keep him out 10 to 12 weeks.

Bernadeau started just 20 games in his four years with Carolina. He said he is comfortable at all three interior line spots and will compete at right guard for the Cowboys. The club wanted to look at him at center this off-season _ he was Ryan Kalil's backup with the Panthers _ but the injury has delayed that plan.

There's a chance Bernadeau won't be ready once training camp begins in late July. But he's confident he'll be able to get back on the field during camp and will be ready for the start of the season.

"I'll be back in time,'' Bernadeau said.

"I'm here for a reason. I think it's to contribute and play. Carolina was a good four years, but I'm looking forward to being here to help contribute as much as I can.''
