Young Players Take Over Morning Walk-through
DallasCowboys.com Report

What's The Scoop:

Wednesday morning's practice was a light walk-through without most of the Cowboys' veteran players. It is not uncommon for head coach Wade Phillips to give the veterans an occasional morning off when they have back-to-back two-a-days.

The entire 80-man roster will practice Wednesday afternoon.

Without the veterans around, the younger players received the opportunity to show the coaches and fans what they have learned and how they are progressing, albeit at a slower speed.

"A day like this you get a chance to go out there and work and have to coaches watch you and you only," wide receiver Jesse Holley said. "They want to make sure that you know where you have to be, how to line up and do the small things."

Holley said it's the type of situation where he gets a chance to show the coaches exactly what he knows and earn their confidence with more reps.

"I mean, we already know who the big time guys are and so they are allowed to do different things than we are. With us, you have to make sure that you are positively absolutely at the right place at the right time. Your detail has to be so precise because you're not that star guy," Holley said.

Rookie tight end Scott Sicko said practicing without the veterans helps him out quite a bit.

"Personally it helps me out a lot, I think it helps all the rookies out a lot just to be able to slow the game down a little bit and kind of be able to not only see what you are doing but see what other people on the offensive line or wide receivers are doing," he said. "Just to be able to put all the pieces together. It makes the scheme more clear in your head."

Quick Shots: (Culled from Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning)

•First-team free safety Alan Ball had a diving interception in Tuesday's afternoon practice.

•Running back Felix Jones made a surprise return to Tuesday's afternoon practice after his swelling in his left knee subsided some following the morning practice.

•Tight end Martellus Bennett (sprained ankle), linebacker Sean Lee (quad strain), defensive end Jason Hatcher (hyper-extended elbow) and the rest of the injured players continued their rehab at Wednesday's morning practice.

•Without Tony Romo or Jon Kitna present, second-year quarterback Stephen McGee got most of the reps.

You Should've Seen:

The 40-yard bomb wide receiver Jesse Holley hauled between two defenders from McGee. With the veterans out, Holley seized the opportunity to impress.

Who's Hot:

Linebacker DeMarcus Ware looks to be in mid-season form already. He has constantly been disruptive in the backfield for would-be sacks. It's hard to tell exactly how many he would have by now because they don't hit with full-force or wrap up on tackles during practice. Nevertheless, he continues to be one of the defensive standouts thus far in camp.

Who's Not:

Defensive end Jason Hatcher has missed practice since Monday morning after hyper-extending his left elbow on Sunday. He was seemingly hurt when he was being blocked by Leonard Davis in an attempt to slow down Felix Jones. Unfortunately, the injury set him back in what has been a quality camp for him so far, but the Cowboys don't expect the talented end to miss too much time.
