Veteran Backup OT Rising On Priority List

Posted by nickeatman at 6/7/2012 3:05 PM CDT on dallascowboys.com

While there are a few positions that don’t seem to be completely settled on this team, one of the spots that seems to be lacking is at offensive tackle.

No the starters appear to be set in Tyron Smith and Doug Free. But what behind them?

Swing tackle Jermey Parnell has been around for two years but doesn’t have much experience. After that, it’s nothing but undrafted rookies and so far, none of them have distinguished themselves, although it’s not an easy time to do so, considering the lack of physicality in practice.

Let’s not say the Cowboys are completely closing the door on rookies Levy Adcock (Oklahoma State), Taylor Dever (Notre Dame), Tyrone Novikoff (Idaho) and Jeff Adams (Columbia).

But one of the problems the Cowboys have had during the preseason games of the past is evaluating young skill players – such as quarterbacks and running backs. And because the backup linemen haven’t been up to par, it’s difficult to judge the entire offense.

So don’t be surprised if the Cowboys go searching for some young veterans who are available. In fact, former seventh-round pick Pat McQuistan, who recently spent time in Miami and New Orleans and is an unrestricted free agent, is expected to work out for the Cowboys at Valley Ranch on Friday.

McQuistan is the type of player who wouldn’t push for a starting job, but would give the Cowboys some stability as a backup in those preseason games
.

There are several veteran guys on the street who could fit that role as well. The Giants have a few unrestricted free agent tackles in Kareem McKenzie, Tony Ugoh and Stacy Andrews. Former Steelers tackle Max Starks is also still available.

Amazing that Pat McQuistan has forged a relatively long career in this league. Wasn't his twin brother more highly regarded and isn't he already out of the league? Think he was taken in the 4th by Oakland or Seattle.

Anyway... I'd like to see someone with some experience brought in. I though Alex Barron would pan out and was obviously way wrong.

Of the young guys, I've heard and read the most positive reports on Jeff Adams, so hopefully he sticks to the final 53.

One time before a game I yelled at Greg Ellis when he was getting out of his car at Texas Stadiu. I told him to kill Patrick Ramsey*. He smiled and said "heh."

I'm pretty sure he tells people of that encounter to this day.

*It might not have been Patrick Ramsey. It was 2006, so whoever the Skins QB was at that point.

I always thought it was wierd that his twin brother was a 4th rounder and he was a 7th rounder.

They're supposed to be identical.
