Well we certainly have that going for us, if winning ugly were an art we are the Picasso of it.
This was butt ugly football, again. Yeah we scored on 7 drives and Prescott to Lamb was lethal. Hard to find much else to get overly happy about though.
1) Prescott was pretty good, and he had to be otherwise this was definitely a loss. Threw the ball well and avoided turnovers and like last week, made some plays with his legs that helped the offense. Right now he has 40 yds rushing on 6 carries and if he kept that up for 17 games it would be the 2nd best rushing yards and highest yds per carry of his career. He clearly doesnt want to run at this stage of his career but the lanes are obviously there and taking the yards is a big deal when your OL cant run the ball worth a fuck.
2) Monster game for 88, and it might be the first of many. Seems teams are doing some creative things to try and eliminate Pickens and all the big plays he can make (at least for now) so the opps for Lamb will be there. Last yr Lamb had a career low with 3 tds for the season, he already has 3 tds through 2 games this year.
3) Pretty lousy game from the OL, again. Run blocking through 2 games is horrendous (Javonte Williams averaging 2.9 yds per carry). They get almost no forward push to move anyway and there are missed blocks galore. Some of this will obviously get better when Tyler Smith returns but hopefully the thumb is fully healed and doesnt bother him all season. Pass protection is better than the run blocking but Steele is a total lunk on the field now. Broderick Jones was active yesterday but I don't recall seeing him on the field any (offense or ST) but will be interesting to see if he starts getting ramped up for reps at RT in the next few weeks.
4) Just atrocious defense for the 2nd straight week. Downs had another quality game, Eze was active and by far the best rusher we had leading the team in pressures for 2nd straight game. Barham had some good reps too and overall solid game (even if he did have to puke twice on Jerry's shitty field) and also made the play of the game for us on defense with the forced fumble that Winters recovered. Other than that, it was mostly bad by the defense. Run defense was awful as was the ability to contain Daniels when he was in there. Pass coverage was mostly non existent and the Foreskins missed two gimmee long TDs that could have definitely changed the game. The overall numbers were fairly similar to the poor showing v NYG and the defense has managed to force only two punts in two games. It's only been two games, but it's definitely fair to question whether Parker was the right guy for this right now. It's just bad.
5) Other than Aubrey, a couple nice returns by Turpin and the huge hit by Spann Ford (still dont know how that Foreskin didnt fumble that), the ST continue to be a joke. Penalties and long returns allowed are the norm. Sorensen is arguably the worst ST coach in the league and should have never been retained after last yrs shitshow.
6) On paper, the upcoming schedule looked brutal to start the season. Ravens, at Texans, at Packers, Bucs, at Eagles. The good thing is none of those teams has looked like world beaters and the Texans, Packers and Bucs are all considerably worse than people expected so far. A loss yesterday to a bad Redskins team would have sunk the season for sure IMO but winning 2 or 3 of the next 5 is not all that far-fetched if those other teams continue to struggle. Getting Tyler Smith back after the Texans game would be a big + for the OL. Johnny Walker GM also intimated he was going to make a move or two after the game yesterday. Just not sure adding one single player (even if it is a pretty good ass rusher or a pretty decent CB) would make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.
7) Only two games, but so far I am not impressed with several of the new guys: Von Miller, Jonathan Bullard, Otito Ogboninna, Cobie Durant & Rashan Gary all have been pretty poor IMO. Jalen Thompson has been ok but certainly not great or even good. Dee Winters has been more bad than good IMO. The problem with these guys being pretty bad is the DC pretty much had say (probably THE say) in them signing/trading for them in the first place. He thought they were fits for what he was wanting to do, and so far they have done nothing positive. So either they suck or his scheme is just not very sound. Of these, I'd say I am most surprised at Thompson being painfully average and Gary being poor, even v the run. I thought at a minimum Gary would really be a strong run defender at the point of attack and so far he has not been.
8) I think the top-3 picks have showed promise. They obviously all have a ways to go (Lawrence more than Downs or Barham) but all are trending in the right direction. I think we hit on all 3 of these guys. Downs already looks like the best player on the defense and watching him move around he just moves at a different speed compared to the rest of the players.
9) That 60 yd FG Aubrey hit yesterday was easily good from 65+, maybe even 70, and the other two FGs and all the PATs he hit were good kicks too. I don't see anything to be concerned with him over contrary to what a couple of our Amigos have been contending for weeks now. He was good all preseason and has been good to start this year. The kickoffs are not an Aubrey problem, they are a coaching strategy problem and Schottenheimer should tell Sorensen to shove the directional/spinny kick thing up his ass. Our coverage teams are so bad that even when Aubrey puts the ball down inside the 5 they run it back 30-35-40 yds anyway. Just kick the fucking ball out of the endzone.
10) Really worried what Johnny Walker GM is going to force on the rest of the FO with a trade or two. We obviously need help at pass rush, CB and maybe even one of the LB spots but they arnt going to be able to solve all that with one trade without forfeit pretty much all the draft capital we have left for next yr.
