Hey it's a W, we can definitely start calling these guys the Cardiac Cowboys I think. Just looks like what we are going to have to get used to with this team.

Most expected us to lose, I know I did and they certainly played up to expectations in the first half.

1) They have definitely been a 2nd half team offensively. I think I saw the blurb that we have now scored on 13 of 17 2nd half possessions. I don't know what they are doing with their HT adjustments but it's working and probably the one "strength" of the staff now (at least offensively). Scoring 4 tds in 5 possessions against the Texans D is pretty damn good, but they have had high end success offensively in the other 3 games after halftime too. Most of what the coaching does here is bad, but at least so far this is one thing they have gotten right.

2) Tale of two games for 4. Seemed off in some of his reads and unsure of his self in the pocket in the 1st half, then flipped the script and had a pretty huge second half. I think he only threw one or two bad balls the entire second half and one of those may have been after his hand got stepped on and cut. Was absolutely sizzling with 88 and the Texans had no answer for it despite having a real strong CB pairing.

3) Lamb had one of the all time great games for a Cowboy WR yesterday and as awesome as his game was, could have had another 40 yards or so and a 2nd TD had Prescott seen/looked at him on that end of the 1st half drive. Was unguardable and made a number of really tough grabs when coverage was there. His start to this season has been awesome and he seems like he's been on a mission to erase last seasons struggles at times.

4) People are going to really have to eat crow over Tyler Guyton. He really just needed to stay healthy and continue to get good OL coaching, and he's done that. He worked his ass off in the offseason and it's paid off. Is playing at a really high end level now and gives us two bigtime OL on the same side for years to come once Tyler Smith gets back out there (which could be Thursday, but you would think definitely for GB in two weeks). He also plays with a mean streak when finishing run blocks.

5) Wasn't a huge game yardage wise but Javonte Williams continues to play very well, and finished 3 drives with TD runs. I suspect his yds per carry will go up a decent amount once Tyler Smith returns. Does pretty much everything well, especially blitz/pass pro pickups. Was a sensational signing last yr and bargain for what we resigned him for this year.

6) Defense is still blah. Yes, the run defense yesterday was the best it had been this year, but they were going against a Houston team that wasnt all that good at running the ball anyway (I think 124 yards on opening day was their high). We did get two sacks which as mediocre as that is was an improvement. Q Williams had his 2nd straight pretty good game and Gary showed up for the first time. Clark was strong v the run. Coverage was still shaky, especially when Joey Porter wasnt in the game. Too many wide open guys in zones or occasionally when beating someone in man (like Bland). Other than the run defense, the other thing they did do a fairly good job was v TE Dalton Schultz (only 2 catches for 9 yds) and he's been really good for them since signing there. Also had a 12 catch game v the Bengals in week 2. Was excited to see Downs more at safety but IMO he was better the 1st 3 games in the role they had him in (at least for now) Reddy Steward also was NOT very good at all as the replacement slot/nickel CB. Seemed like he had a bullseye on his head everytime the Texans needed a completion.

7) Newcomer Joey Porter was as advertised. On the field for around 20 plays and did not give up a completion. May have been targeted once and Stroud almost never even looked at his side when he was out there. For a guy who supposedly hadnt done a lot in training camp/preseason and first 3 weeks of this season he looked to be in excellent shape. Looks much quicker/faster than I thought he was. Even someone who is as challenged strategy wise as Christian Parker seems to be, having Porter on the field fulltime should lead to some improvements.

8) I just do not understand what this HC and FO's obsession is with ST Coach Nick Sorensen. 2nd straight game a field goal was blocked, and I think for the first time in my life I saw what appeared to be a "jail break" on a FG where multiple guys came almost untouched into the backfield for an easy block. After having several good coverages on kicks earlier, allowed another really long return and then a subsequent short field TD because of it. This clown is the absolute worst ST coach in the league and should be fired immediately. Cannot coach himself out of a wet paperbag. Every week its gaffe after gaffe with his units.

9) Speaking of the blocked FG, numnutz HC completely blew back to back possessions at the end of the first half by trying 60+ yd FGs in lieu of simply punting, costing the team 6 pts that almost assuredly wouldn't have happened had they simply punted it away. First, he knows this defense stinks and cant stop anybody, why risk giving opponents short field with almost guaranteed scores? Second, he has witnessed first hand that Sorensen's ST are a complete clusterfuck and cannot execute properly. Two FG's have been blocked the last two weeks. Last yr Aubrey had a couple (maybe three kicks) blocked. Why even go there? I can see why trying 60+ yd FGs is tempting with Aubrey, but why not reserve those for end of half/end of game scenarios when missing the kick (or even getting it blocked) isnt such a threat to making the scoreboard worse? Is it really this hard to comprehend?

10) Would think after yesterday, the FO may really double or triple down on trying to make another move on defense to help the non-existent pass rush. Wathing the 0-fer teams like Arizona (Josh Sweat) or LAC (Khalil Mack) is probably advisable. Von Miller is 100% washed up and at this point they should have the discussion about him retiring. He MIGHT have gotten credit for one pressure yesterday but otherwise was a complete no-show in the boxscore again. No sacks, no tackles, no TFLs and no QB knockdowns. Meanwhile the guy Parker didnt want, Jadeveon Clowny had 4 tackles, a half sack, two or three QB knockdowns and a TFL v the run. Clowney also had a sack on opening day before missing last two games. Clowney admitted he wanted to stay in Dallas, not keeping him after the yr he had last yr for us was stupid.

11) Several players should not be on the field much, if any moving forward. Jake Ferguson was just downright fucking awful yesterday. His complete lack of effort in run blocking should result in benching. Terence Steele is the worst RT in the league and had another putrid game (pass and run blocking) yesterday. Malik Hooker is the Steele of the defense. Made one decent play to break up a pass but otherwise was never close to doing anything good the rest of the game and nearly fucked up the win by letting the Hail Mary go right through his hands instead of just knocking it down. The coaches seem married to each of these 3 losers, but they shouldnt be. Other players see how bad these guys are on gameday and certainly when watching the game film. At some point they know the team cares nothing about accountability.

I think what we saw last week and this week is just what we are going to have to be accustomed to most of the year. The defense isnt good and I have real doubts Parker is capable of making adjustments to fix it. He should blitz more but doesnt seem to want to. Offensively we are really good and can potentially be great on a week to week basis, especially once Tyler Smith returns to help the OL. ST are garbage and I am convinced we will lose another game or two this yr because of them (probably can already credit last week's loss in large part due to Sorensen)

My personal observation and the reason for the win ties directly into your first paragraph. Specifically pass protection improvement comparing the first half and 2nd was night and day. IF Houston's pass rush had continued to have that same success in the 2nd as the 1st half then that's an L imo. So good job to Riley and Adams. That's as far as I can go with coaching compliments.

Because my whole other issue IS with coaching.
Both this head coach and the special teams coach. I mean do I add the DC as well or is it still too early?

We settle for this garbage. We settle for anything remotely resembling improvement as compared to last year's defensive dumpster fire.

Sorensen, as you have previously mentioned should not have even been retained from last year. What did he miss in the film room studying his field goal blocking unit? 2 weeks in a row?
GTFOH!

And then there's this Dallas Cowboy HC impersonator we are also forced to settle with.
I mean people are comparing him to Garrett its so bad and I'm not even sure he's as good as Garrett. I know, that's blasphemous around these parts, but it's true in my eyes.

Thanks for the chance to piggy back on your rant.
Mine is done now.

Sorensen needs to go, but we almost never fire position coaches in-season.
He may be the absolute worst one ever though. Never should have been retained after last yrs mediocrity on ST and he is hurting the team now. Not sure what they'd do if they shitcan him although they do have Carlos Polk as asst ST coach. They could promote him and maybe hire a "consultant" to help him if needed.

But Sorensen is awful and has to go.
