Good win yesterday in what was a pretty big game for us. 2-4-1 looks a lot worse than 3-3-1, and it was a division game.
It wasn't perfect in any phase but overall, really good day for sure. Washington cut the lead to 20-15 with 45 seconds left and from there we took them to the woodshed. Final score didnt truly do the domination justice as the dipshit refs gifted the Foreskins 7 pts once we were up 41-15.
1) Prescott's on a real heater and is playing quite possibly (more like probably) the best football of his career. The fact that he did a lot of this with a mishmash of lineups is also impressive but yesterday with all but one starter back (starting C Beebe) was a good preview of what might can be. They had the safety (thought that was an ultra conservative play-call there, with as well as we throw it going play-action and getting a nice chunk play, or at least a short completion to get us off the GL seemed like a gimmee) and then had a couple bad series but overall they scored on 7 different drives including the ridiculous 35 second length of the field TD drive before halftime. They also ran off nearly 8 minutes of the last 10 minutes of the game (two drives) and the last one they held it for 4 and half mins to end the game. Good stuff.
2) Lamb and Pickens are just ridiculous together and our WR as a group may well be the best unit in the league. If they stay healthy it's going to create massive problems for opponents to try and slow us down, as we might get to a point where we can run the ball at will because they have to lay back. For as much as everyone hates the Parsons trade, the Pickens trade was the complete opposite and while its only 7 games, this is looking like one of the best acquisitions they have made post-Jimmy. I'm not sure Cee Dee is really 100% and it looked like he went off after a few plays favoring his sprained ankle. Still it was a 100+ yd game and included the awesome 70+ yd TD. Pickens stole Marshawn Lattimore's candy yesterday. Turpin looked healthy and explosive. Flournoy and Tolbert are quality 4/5 type WR's. I still think moving Tolbert for a late rd pick or a defensive player that can help would be smart.
3) OL had some struggles at a few points in pass pro, but seemed to get it together as the game wore on. Thought Prescott had to take a few too many shots/pressures early in the game. Hoffman is super high quality depth but the more he plays the more you can kind of see the limitations, getting Beebe back healthy could be a big boost inside. I still think Nathan Thomas is a starter quality player but barring injury it doesn't look like the coaches will put him out there ahead of Guyton or Steele for now. Overall we have to all be happy with what Adams and Rileyn have done with this unit, vast improvement over recent seasons (esp in run game)
4) Jevonte Williams was a grand larceny steal in FA. He's now just short of 600 yds and 7 total TDs. Runs with anger. Rarely ever stopped at the LOS. Having a great yr and as noted above, if Lamb/Pickens are healthy on the field together he is going to start seeing the rushing lanes get bigger and bigger I think. Jaydon Blue got some time and looked pretty good for the first time, and finished out the game with a couple of rushing first downs. Had 29 yds on 7 carries and a nice outside run of about 15 yds wiped out by a holding call.
5) Ferg had a couple drops early in the yr (incl one that should have been a HUGE TD v Philly) but since then has been really solid. Would love to see them get him going more in the intermedia areas of the middle but he has become a real weapon down inside the 10. Several of these he is wide open and while he did drop the one v Philly he's since had a couple nice grabs down there, including one yesterday on a BB from Prescott from short distance. Perhaps teams' adjustments to having Lamb/Pickens on the field together will open up some bigger plays for Ferg.
6) Not going to get bent of shape with glee over the defense. Anytime you play a team missing their best WR it's an advantage, and Washington was missing their TOP THREE. Coverages naturally should have been better. That said, they got 4 legit sacks and 2 legit turnovers, and the two turnovers were HUGE plays. They've documented more man to man coverage was called (well over 40%, by far the highest of the season) and there were doe decent blitzes mixed in, including the one James got the strip sack on. While the stat box says we gave up 136 total yards rushing, the majority of that was QB runs/scrambles. 33 yards on 13 carries for their leading rusher (2.5yds per carry, by far his worst game), and Washington also had all 5 of their projected starting OL on the field for the first time. Run D was definitely an improvement over the last two games. Hopefully that trend continues.
7) Ho hum, another great kicking display by the GOAT Aubrey. That 61 yarder was prob good from 70 (maybe even easily). He also kicked one FG so high that it might have been a threat to the scoreboard. Punters have hit it, but Aubrey's height on this one particular kick was in orbit. The one knock was the kickoffs, he has been pretty good at getting them to land inside the 10, but he's also had two or three out of bounds now and our kick return coverage is not as good as the rest of the special teams. We allowed several big creases and they nearly broke two bigtime returns on us. Maybe it makes more sense to kick them through the endzone. By the way, Tom Brady commented that Aubrey told him he does NOT practice long FG attempts at all, and that he normally kicks from 52/53 yards. Brady seemed stunned, because the results are out of this world good. Another record setter for the GOAT, now 5 60+ FG's. Fans pseudo booing when Schottenheimer elected to punt from midfield was classic comedy gold at one point too.
8) Will they or won't they make a trade or two to shore up the defense further? Seems like the million dollar question now and I can easily see both sides of the argument for and against, but it's a 30 yr draught now with no championships. They have an elite level offense, maybe the best we have seen in a long, long time if the OL can continue to gel and everyone stays healthy. They have the two best ST performers in the league in Aubrey and Turpin. 2 of 3 phases of the game we are elite. But the defense is bad, really bad. Most people believe the Eagles and Packers are the two best teams in the NFC (I'd throw the Rams in too) and we should be 2-0 vs those them. If they do nothing they are banking on existing guys "getting better" to hopefully improve to average. If they made two good moves, perhaps the margin for error improves. If they don't do anything and then don't make the playoffs or make a run once getting there because of a very poor defense, there will be a massive public outcry. On the flip side, if they make a couple of big moves and then still come up short, the same will happen. If the draught hadn't been this long, i might side more on just let things play out. But it's 3 decades of it.
Great win and now back to back games against teams that have seemingly had our number for years in Broncos and Cards. Winning 1 and losing 1 wouldn't be the worst thing but winning BOTH might be a real positive statement and give us a ton of momentum going into the bye week.
