Day After Thoughts- Bad team beats badder team

Yeah, we arnt all that good. But the Egirls are even less good and that always brings warmth to my heart.

I thought Aikman's postgame comments were spot-on, yeah it's a win but it probably isn't much of a "statement" or anything. We beat a bad team missing half their offense and for a lot of the game our shitpile defense couldn't even stop their backups. The Eagles hadnt scored an opening game drive TD or opening 2nd half drive TD all YEAR, but accomplished both those feats against the Gloomsday Defense last night. The 17 play, nearly 10 minute drive to open the 2nd half was one of the more embarrassing displays of defense we've ever seen.

1) Will start with the good, the OL was dominant. Unlike our D which went up against a bunch of backups, Philly had a pretty healthy defense. While their run D has slipped some this yr, no other team did what we did to them. 200+ yards and some gigantic holes just blown through their front 7. A+ effort and execution from the OL as a group but what the interior guys did was just a total ass whipping. Glad to se 6th OL Broderick Jones getting more snaps and he did make a difference as well. Really helped spring several nice runs for Williams and Goodson both. Guyton suffocated his guy/s in pass protection again too. Tyler Smith took a couple games to get it going, but he was back to looking like a true all pro last night. Also might have been Booker's best game as a pro. Not a single negative play allowed by this group last night on 65 snaps.

2) They don't do a lot right when it comes to free agents, but they nailed the Javonte Williams move. Was great last yr and has ran hard all yr so far, with just so-so results because of middling blocking and lack of dedication to the run. Last night they got both, and he was outstanding. One of my favorite guys on the team. They need to run the ball like this more often because it lessens the possibility of 4 messing stuff up. 38 runs vs 27 passes is definitely ideal.

3) Really glad to see Overshown back out there and flying around. Had a nice game and was probably the best defender we had on the field for most of the game. Active v the run and pass, deflected one throw and had a great pick on another one. Also showed he has the explosion for solid blitzing reps. Really hope he can stay healthy, he works his ass off and is a genuinely good kid.

4) Prescott had 3 really good TD throws (two to Lamb and one to Pickens) but he had a bunch of clunker throws and was damn lucky not to have one or two picks (incl one that would have been a walk-in TD down near our GL). Had two or three downfield plays he badly messed up, although Lamb bailed him out on one of the misfires with a sensational catch. This is as poor as he has ever thrown it downfield IMO. Not sure if he is playing through something (he has taken some pretty big hits this yr, including one really bad one to the ribs last week) but there's def something off.

5) Lamb and Pickens are great, but Ryan Flournoy is really good too and I think if they got a blockbuster offer for Pickens then RF could step right into that role and we'd be fine. Has good size, excellent hands, runs really good routes and has high end RAC skills. We are lucky to have him (literally lucky as hell, we stupidly cut him for a few days before the season opener last yr). Has a great future.

6) Another week, more bad clock/game mismanagement from Schottenheimer. We had two timeouts remaining and the dumbass HC inexplicably didnt use one of them after we got close to midfield. Prescott compounded the problem by having two bad misfires on what should have been long TDs to Lamb. It was a great drive to end the half and we did get the 3, but we should have had 7. Bad game clock management and two bad long throws cost us.

7) Keep saying it every week, but Von Miller is a waste of a roster spot and stealing PT from younger guys who have way more ability than he does at this point. His best play last night was tackling the QB from behind after others flushed him out. The play ended up a positive gain so no sack. This is 7 games in now, and the dude doesnt have any sacks, almost no pressures or QB knockdowns and no TFLs. Dude had an awesome career and belongs in the HoF, but he is doing nothing to help this team and Parker is hurting potential production by playing him. Parker essentially chose Miller over Jadaveon Clowney, and that was a huge miss.

8) Penalties galore in the first half cost this team badly. ST holding call wiped out a 90 KO return for a TD and multiple defensive penalties extended drives. They are not good enough to overcome this stuff and need to weed it out, unfortunately I dont think this staff is capable of doing that.

9) 2 catches for 11 yards. That's all we got from the TE spot (and both from BSF). Ferguson had a goose egg again (did draw one downfield PI call) but also appears to have dropped another TD pass. On the play Prescott pulled the houdini and escaped left he threw a ball into the endzone towards Ferguson. At first it looked like good defense but seeing a clip today it looks like it hit Ferg in the hands. We got the FG there too, but another 4 pts pissed away by a bust signing at TE. And his blocking is horrendous. So is Schoon for that matter. Gets run over or knocked down a ton. BSF should be the FT starter (not splitting reps, which is what the snap counts showed again last night) and they should probably try and find another TE on someone's PS and just cut the Schoon. I doubt anyone would give us anything for him via trade.

10) Jones said this morning that a trade for any type of real impact player was highly unlikely. It's prob for the best long term but it means we are stuck with the likes of Miller and Gary making feeble efforts to get any real pass rush at all. Eze gets pressures but rarely finishes (did get one last night though) and Lawrence has obvious physical talent but needs more reps and time to develop. The only consistent rush we really have is inside from Quinnen Williams, and OLs double-team the shit out of him knowing they really dont have to worry about anyone else. While I'd hate to see them part with more draft picks if they could get a young, still ascending (and HEALTHY) pass rusher I do think it's worth considering. A few names I like are Tuipulotu from the Chargers, Chase Young from the Saints and Ale Highsmith from Stealers. Maxx Crosby will cost way too much and Josh Sweat does not look like he is healthy, although we will get an up close look at him this weekend.

They obviously have a favorable schedule coming up with Cards at home, at the Colts (who may trade away half their team between now and then), Niners at home, Titans at home and Philthy at home again. We know they cant take any team for granted and they are just as likely to piss the bed and go 1-4 as they are 4-1 or 5-0, but the games are winnable. Even the Niners showed they could be had but they always seem to just bully the hell out of us. If they were to go 4-1 that would get us to 7-5 after Thanksgiving, but then the brutal December schedule awaits. The Giants have had a fairly easy schedule to date and have upcoming games against the Jags, at Seahawks, Browns, at Lions and then the game against us. I think its safe to say the Eagles and Foreskins are out of it so it's a two team race to get to 8, 9 or 10 wins and then get hammered in the WC round.

Yeah,
I took away a good positive of that oline performance. You can only beat who's on the schedule and that Eagles team is absolutely decimated by injuries, but at the very least the oline and Williams showed they can actually run the ball against a good front.
That's pretty much my take away from the whole game.

BUT other small nuggets include:
QW jumped offsides but I thought he kinda supported his paycheck with his play once again too.

Tyler Smith specifically, was dominant on the oline.

Porter seems to take his job seriously.

After that, any other dialog on the defense's shortcomings regarding lack of run dee and poor 3rd down performance can not be emphasized enough. My gosh man, Barkley is one thing, but Dameon Pierce too?

Bout all I got.
Did what they were supposed to do against a MASH unit opponent.
Now surprise me and beat the Cards.
