Yeah yeah, it's a day late. Sue me.
Breaking news- this team sucks ass. Just clusterfuck on defense in every way possible and the decision making/play calling from the HC (especially down inside the 5) is just beyond stupid. The ST coordinator is the worst in the league and had a major hand in sending the game from obvious OT into a loss.
This team constantly invents new and sensational ways to LOSE. It never fails, just when you think you have pretty much seen it all they deliver more mind numbingly stupid new ways to lose. This is what LOSERS do, and there is no doubt the Dallas Cowboys under Jerry Jones have absolutely mastered it.
1) Wanted to believe in Schottenheimer. Very likable guy and his father was a great NFL HC for a long time, but he has to be turning over in his grave about how stupid his son is at times. It started on the opening possession and never ended for him in what was a truly dreadful display of head coaching. They rammed the ball down Baltimore's throat the entire opening drive, only to have 2nd and goal from the 1 and proceed to call back to back failed pass plays and settle for 3. Then dumbass did it again late in the game after the gift PI call set us up with 1st and goal at the 2yrd line with 28 seconds left and a timeout in our pocket. (at this point it showed we had a 78% chance to WIN the game, which seemed low to me considering the situation). A W seemed certain. Instead, a clusterfuck of dumb decisions (a false start from a guy who shouldnt be on the field to begin with, more passes and an inexplicably bad decision by Schottenheimer to play for OT on 3rd and goal from the 5 yard line, despite having an offense loaded at WR and two really good endzone threats at TE). Then they assumed the other team would take a knee with 7 seconds left, called a terrible coverage and gave away an uncontested 30yrd gain right down the middle of the field to give Baltimore a long FG to win. Schottenheimer signed off on all this. I honestly don't see how the players have much faith in him as a HC anymore.
2) As bad as Schottenheimer was, the defensive leadership is even worse. It's obvious now after 3 weeks that Christian Parker is in over his head. Another classic example of a guy with all the pedigree and good vibes in the world around him, but once he gets the lead role proves he cannot do the job. This is the danger when it comes to giving someone a shot who has never "done it" before. He deserved his chance and as widely praised by everyone in the league, but his scheme is a complete failure. The few good players we do have are being completely wasted. He cannot generate pass rush to save his life, and his coverage schemes are garbage. The run defense has given up more yards each week after letting the Ravens get nearly 200. Sure they had the great stops on 3rd/4th downs on Henry but they got curb stomped again overall. Defense has one legitimate sack in 3 games (by our 1st rd pick DB), no interceptions, very few passes defensed and the softest coverage anyone could possibly see.
3) ST Coach Nick Sorensen was a failed defensive coordinator when Schottenheimer hired him. He had one year as a ST Coordinator, and his Jaguar team had catastrophically bad special teams that ranked at the bottom of the league in nearly everything (2021).It's gone exactly as most of us predicted, he's a massive failure. He coaches the best kicker in the league to constantly kick these knuckleball kickoffs into the corners, and the ball bounces out of bounds over and over and over, giving the other team the ball at the 40 against a horrible defense way too much (two more in this game). Then with the game on the line and the obvious thing to do with only 7 seconds left, instead of kicking the ball on the ground down the middle of the field to run off more time, dipshit tells Aubrey to kick it out of the universe. Bad ST also cost us a blocked FG, with a complete failure in protection leading to an easy kick block. Parcells used to talk about hidden yards and how much bad special teams could cost you over a course of a season, and Sorensen is the poster child of what Parcells was talking about.
4) We have changed head coaches and assistants multiple times, have had multiple roster makeovers, changed stadiums, changed philosophy towards which positions to favor in the draft etc etc...and STILL the team is a laughingstock failure that cannot make a legitimate championship run, this year is going to be an extension of the unprecedented run of failure by Jerry Jones and his Spawn. THEY are the only constant here, and nothing ever changes.
5) Lost in the shuffle of another horrendous loss was good efforts by several players. Tyler Guyton is turning into a stud at LT and when Tyler Smith returns we have a potentially dominant left side of the line set for years to come. Javonte Williams had a great game with nearly 100 yds rushing and another TD, and he probably could have had two more if not for Schottenheimer's dumbfuck playcalling at the 1 and 2 yrd lines on two other drives. Lamb and Pickens had solid games (esp Lamb). Barham had a really good game and continues to show he can help be a real core player in the defense for years to come. Brevyn Spann-Ford should probalby be TE 1 and had another huge hit on special teams this week. Great catch and run on the one ball he was targeted, could be a real menace in the redzone too if the coaching staff would utilize him right. Teams absolutely ignore Caleb Downs in coverage and when he is shown, he is normally glued to whomever he is guarding. I still cannot tell if he is "good" or not but Otito Ogbonnia continues to make plays. Had our only legit QB knockdown to go along with 6 tackles playing mostly from the NT spot. Ezruiruaku and Lawrence flash, but struggle to finish. They have to start converting some of those rushes to sacks but I suspect a stronger coordinator could scheme the pass rush far better than Parker has shown too.
6) More questionable officiating in this game. As noted above the Lamb PI call late in the game may have been a gift (there was alot of contact going both ways) but officials badly blew a defensive PI call on Bland where the Ravens WR clearly pushed off with BOTH arms, shoving Bland to the ground. Instead of 3rd and 5, the Ravens got nearly 20 yards and a 1st down and later scored a TD on that drive. The "fumble" on Ferguson was also very iffy, as it probably should have been ruled an incomplete pass but wasnt, costing us at least 3 pts there. Despite the Ravens missing their starting LT and then getting another C hurt during the game (so two backups playing) somehow the Ravens were not flagged for a single holding call despite at least two times I saw Cowboy players blatantly tackled to the ground behind the LOS. As I noted during the gameday thread, had the throwaway ball at the end to Pickens been a good pass and caught, I think its likely Pickens would have been called for OPI himself. He definitely extended both arms to get some separation and the official was looking right at it. The only reason he didnt flag it was because the ball had no chance to be caught. It still probably should have been called though.
7) Secondary is decimated by injuries and several of the backups are really bad. Marquese Bell should not have made the team out of camp anyway and has been dreadful every week in the regular season. The more he is on the field the worse for us. It looks like Shavon Revel has a hyper extended knee and with Durant already out we can ill afford to lose him for any time. Caelen Carson played in the 4th qtr and didnt loo any different than last yr to me. Jalen Thomson will miss 4-6 weeks (at least) with a bad hamstring injury too.
8) Terrance Steele had another really bad game before getting hurt. Broderick Jones replaced him for one snap and already looked better in terms of how he moved to me. Wonder if this is the week we finally see Steele removed or at least split time (if he even plays, he left with an injury himself on that final drive)
9) Another reminder that the Jones' had no interest at all in discussing our HC spot with Ben Johnson or Joe Brady, either of whom probably would be a massive upgrade for us.
Ugly, ugly way to lose a winnable game and we are going into Houston to face a really struggling Texans team. If they lose this game they really may be headed for a bonafide train wreck 3-14/4-13 type season. I dont see how Schottenheimer survives a non-playoff season.
