Will be at our company golf tournament tomorrow, probably wont be on till later.
Glad we won the game, but it was pretty ugly. Offense only gets one TD against a mediocre defensive team missing two of their best players (including their best CB). Defense finally gets a pick, but otherwise didnt do much of anything else save a few plays here or there, and this against a team that had to do some major shuffling on their OL, and missing their best OL.
1) In a game where there's alot more to complain about than be happy about, here's a few guys I think get a thumbs up. Bailey for obvious reasons. Kicks 4 FG's, nails everyone of them. Had one bad kickoff (opening) but then pummeled the football on the rest including one that might have went through the uprights. Tanner didnt have a ton of yards, but I really like how he runs so hard/physical. Takes good care of the football and shows good hands out of the backfield. he also blocks the right people in pass protection. Sean Lee was everywhere till he got hurt. Really liked Josh Brent's play, he caused the INT with a great rush up the middle. Tyrone Crawford is starting to make some plays and is pretty quick off the ball. I thought Jason Hatcher played pretty well. Spencer had a decent game, especially at the end with a big sack and a couple of pressures/run stuffs. Claiborne is eons better than the guy we paid 50 million for already. Lastly, this ST guy Frampton was a very nice add. He is really good on the cover teams. Too bad Costa got hurt, he was having another really good game and compared to last year, appears to be a completely different player. Kudos to the fill-in punter too, he did an outstanding job again.
2) Mediocre game by the WR's, against a depleted secondary. More dropped balls, an awful fumble by a guy who should know better. Ogletree also ran the wrong route once, and got yelled at by Romo and Garrett afterward.
3) Alot of the big money players arnt earning their dough. Even though Romo's numbers werent bad, he missed a gimmee TD to Austin early in the game (ball was thrown so poorly, Austin had no shot) then missed a wide open Witten late in the game for a long TD. He also got very fortunate that he didnt have another pick 6 TD against him. On that play he tried to force it to Witten, when it appeared ther RB (I think it might have been Tanner) was wide open. Luckily they dropped the pick. Carr is really starting to worry me. He doesnt even come close to making plays on the ball and appears to be content with simply letting the WR catch it with ease and then just hope to tackle him. Campo would be proud. Ratliff had one or two nice pressures, but otherwise the only noticeable thing he did was have a knuckleheaded penalty that gave the Panthers a first down in the redzone. Austin had the before-mentioned awful fumble because he didnt cover the ball up, despite having to know other guys were tracking him from behind down the middle. Neither Ware nor Spencer had any consistent pressure. They had a few moments each, but I was hoping for more against a team that was missing their best OL and had to shuffle 3 positions for this game.
4) Somebody needs to tell that fat dumbass Ryan to quit playing this 3 man line prevent garbage on 3rd and long. It almost never works, unless the oppsing WR just happens to drop it. (which happened once or twice today) They got 8 guys to cover 5, and yet we still see guys running scott free down field somewhere, many times between the hashes.
5) The run blocking was nowhere near as good as last week, but some of that can be attributed to not having Murray and the Panthers playing alot of 8 men up fronts. Still, the pass protection was really solid (I think Carolina had 7 sacks on Matt Ryan two weeks ago), they didnt get a sack on Romo today and rarely hit him. Two good efforts in a row now, so maybe its a positive sign for the rest of the year. Callahan's influence seems to be setting in on all of them, but as mentioned above Costa seems to have really took to him. Hopefully he can return in a few weeks, because while Cook is decent enough in pass protection, he definitely is not as good a run blocker.
6) Still wondering what happened to Mike Jenkins today. He wasnt on the inactive list and I didnt see him on the field for a single play. If he's healthy, if I were coaching this team I might haver to seriously consider starting him at CB and moving Carr to FS the rest of the year. 1) Our safety play is really poor and 2) Carr is not very good at CB right now.
7) Garrett and Romo have got to start trying to get some plays downfield. I saw Carolina repeatedly play alot of 8 man fronts on early downs, and we rarely tried anything downfield. Its really been this way all year. Even if Romo flings it down there incomplete, you gotta show some of this to stretch the field. We are definitely becoming a dink and dunk team, and its too hard to score consistently when you dont make any big plays.
8) I just cant believe all the injuries this year. Now Lee has a toe injury which they are saying could be the dreaded turf toe, and he is really a guy we have to have with the Giants and Falcons offenses upcoming. Numerous players got hurt during this game and were in and out of the lineup, and Costa may be done for the year.
Next weeks game vs NYG is huge. If they somehow win that we'd be 4-3 and theoretically in 1st place (we'd be 4-3 but with a sweep over the 5-3 Giants). Then you have some hope that maybe you can split Atlanta/Philly. At 5-4 we have 7 games remaining against a schedule that doesnt appear all that daunting. The Skins lost another player or two for the season today (I think one of them was TE Fred Davis). Philly has floundered since day one and appears ready to collapse. We'd have a sweep over NYG. But its a big if. We dont play well at home, NYG has beaten us both times here and will probably catch a big break again against us with Murray likely being out (and probably Lee and Costa too). The Giants didnt have it easy today, but seem to be playing much better now than when we played them 5 or 6 weeks ago.
