It's basically a given 2-3 of these guys make the team, based on recent years. Anyone want to guess which ones do this year?

I am pretty disappointed who we ended up with this year. Usually it is a much stronger group where you can pick out 3-4 guys who could make it.

Overall, Copeland probably has the easiest route, would be tough for him to not be better than Tyler Clutts. Washington has good speed, and is probably our fastest WR. Malena is a good little back, but I doubt he gets much of a shot to unseat Randle, though he should. Davon Coleman seems promising as well as he did good things with Arizona State alongside Sutton. Whaley would be okay if his knee wasn't messed up, he'll probably be stashed on IR or something.

Here are some guys I wish we got but didn't:

Tyler Shatley OG Clemson
James Morris LB Iowa
Justin Jones TE East Carolina
Kenny Ladler S Vanderbilt
Anthony Johnson DL LSU
Kerry Hyder Jr DT Texas Tech

Calvin Barnett DL Oklahoma State
Zach Orr LB North Texas

Cowboys add college free agents

May, 11, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys were busy after the draft, agreeing to deals with more than 20 college free agents, including Baylor tight end Jordan Najvar.

In a spread offense Najvar didn’t get many opportunities, catching 35 passes in three years, but he has an NFL frame at 6-foot-5 and 256 pounds. The Cowboys have only three tight ends on the roster in Jason Witten, Gavin Escobar and James Hanna. The Cowboys also reached a deal with Illinois tight end Evan Wilson.

The Cowboys also added Baylor running back Glasco Martin and Texas A&M running back Ben Malena, who took part in the Cowboys’ Dallas Day workout. He starred at Cedar Hill before going to A&M. The Cowboys also agreed to deals with defensive linemen Chris Whaley (Texas) and Davon Coleman (Arizona State) who were among the team’s national visitors.

The Cowboys drafted players from Northern Illinois (Ken Bishop), Baylor (Ahmad Dixon) and Iowa (Anthony Hitchens), and also added players as free agents from those schools.

The Cowboys also added the following players: Dustin Vaughan, QB, West Texas A&M, Ryan Smith, S, Auburn, Josh Aladenoye, OT, Illinois State, Joe Windsor, DE, Northern Illinois, Dontavis Sapp, LB, Tennessee, Ronald Patrick, OG, South Carolina, Jarrod Pughsley, OT Akron, Cody Mandell, P, Alabama, Marvin Robinson, S, Ferris State, Keith Smith, LB, San Jose State, Brian Clarke, OG, Bloomsburg, J.C. Copeland, FB, LSU, L'Damian Washington, WR, Missouri, Andre Cureton, OL, Cincinnati, Casey Kreiter, LS, Iowa, Jocquel Skinner, CB, Bethel, Chris Boyd, WR, Vanderbilt.

JC Copeland is one of the obvious ones, but Davon Coleman from ASU is interesting, he made a lot of plays last yr and was actually a far better player than Will Sutton was in 2013. Ronald Patrick was a really solid starter at G for South Carolina. Chris Whaley has drawn a lot of Henry Melton comparisons. I think he will be IR'd all yr this yr but could be very interesting in 2015. Brian Clarke the G from Bloomsberg has gotten some positive pub. FS Marvin Robinson from Ferris St started out at Michigan, not sure what his story is but he apparently was highly regarded at one time. Baylor TE Jordan Navjar is supposedly a high quality blocker and has good size (he was originally at Stanford before transferring). The WR from Missouri has excellent size & speed.

Surprised about Dion Bailey. I thought Kiffin coached him at USC...or maybe Kiffin knew something about him.

Kiffin is a tool.

He claimed TJ McDonald was as NFL ready a player as he has ever coached.

Then TJ wasn't even on our draft board.

Yet, TJ was an effective 10-game starter for the Rams. Again, not even on our draft board. We had a draftable grade on Jakar Hamilton.

As for Dion, he played LB for 3 years at USC before moving to S this last season. Even then, the DC (Clancy Pendergast) used him as a nickel LB most of the time. He's in a good spot backing up Kam Chancellor and playing Special Teams. He's a good football player but not overly athletic.
