Cowboys tidbits: Why Will Allen makes it

IRVING, Texas – Here are a couple of Cowboys quick hits to tide you over for a little bit:

• Unless he completely flames out in the offseason and early in camp the way Brodney Pool did last summer, safety Will Allen will be on the Cowboys’ roster this year. In addition to the $65,000 signing bonus he received on the one-year minimum salary-benefit deal worth the $840,000, he was guaranteed $555,000 of the base salary. His cap number this year is $620,000. Linebacker Ernie Sims signed the same deal but minus the signing bonus and guarantee, which would seem to keep him on a roster bubble through camp.

• For those wanting the Cowboys to cut Nate Livings, remember that his $1.7 million base salary this year is guaranteed. If they cut him and he signed with another team, the Cowboys would only owe him the difference between a potential new salary (likely the minimum) and the $1.7 million.

• Some of you have asked why Matt Johnson is ineligible to take part in this week’s rookie minicamp after not playing a snap as a rookie last year. Here’s why: he earned a pension credit. Ronald Leary didn’t earn that credit after spending most of the year on the practice squad before a late call-up to the active roster and therefore can practice this week.

• When I listed the Cowboys’ defensive line in a post last week, I forgot to mention Brian Price. He was a “futures” signing after the season and could be a beneficiary of the team’s move to the 4-3 scheme. He did not play last year after he was cut by Chicago following a trade from Tampa Bay, but he was a second-round pick in 2010 by the Buccaneers. The Cowboys signed him to a two-year deal but there is an injury waiver in the contract because of a pelvic condition that required surgeries in 2010. The Cowboys took a similar chance on Marc Colombo in 2005. His career nearly ended because of a serious knee injury suffered in Chicago, but he was able to win the right tackle job in 2006 and hold on to it through 2010.

• For those scoring at home: Tony Romo has passed on playing the Azalea Invitational in Charleston, S.C., one of the better amateur tournaments anywhere, the local Adams Golf Pro/Scratch, which he has won in the past, and will not attempt to qualify for the HP Byron Nelson Championship or the U.S. Open.

Didn't we end up paying Brodney his contract for last year because he was in camp for so long?

So is there any great expectation from Price if he is fully recovered? He will have about the same playing experience as Crawford, right? If by divine dice roll, both Price and Crawford gain some rabies as D-linemen, Dallas would be in good shape on the DL. Hatcher and Ratliff for now with Lissemore, Crawford and Price as rotational depth.

I will say that if Price returns to form from his junior year at UCLA, we just stole a player. He just barely turned 24.

  • Selected Pac-10 Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Pac-10
  • Named first-team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association and SI.com
  • Named second-team by the Walter Camp Foundation, The Sporting News, Phil Steele and scout.com
  • Named third-team by Associated Press
  • 23.5 tackles for loss (44.5 career)
  • 7.0 sacks (12.5 career)

IMO, he's tailor made for this Defense.

Not gonna get too excited about price. His injury sounded really odd and fucked up.

He had the surgery in 2011, he's played since although not yet at the level he played at UCLA. He's had some discipline issues the past few years in Tampa Bay and Chicago (as well as during his time at UCLA). He passed a physical when he was traded to Chicago and again when he signed here.

from an article right after he was traded to the Bears...
In May, Price's sister, Bridget, was killed in a hit-and-run car accident, leading the defensive tackle to eventually suffer a breakdown that reportedly left him hospitalized from physical and mental exhaustion.

According to reports, shortly after Price rejoined Buccaneers teammates, he became involved in an altercation with first-round pick Mark Barron.

"He has struggled some here in the last year," Emery said Thursday after the team announced the trade. "He's had a tough go of it with family issues, obviously with his sister passing away. He's had a hard time with the transition. He's a player that needs a new home, and we're excited to bring him to Chicago."

Head coach Lovie Smith said the Bears' family atmosphere could help any player looking for a second chance.

"I think we have a great locker room for any player coming in," he said. "(If) you want to be successful, want another second chance to make some things right or just a new start, this is a great place for it.

"Our guys are gonna meet him, be there for him as a teammate and let him know how we do things. We're bringing him in here to help us win football games and hopefully that's what he's coming in here to do."

from a Blogging the Boys article, so take it for what it's worth...

I was informed that Kiffin thinks Price is a better player than a certain Sharrif Floyd will be.

Of course, that explains why we didn't draft a DT, right?

That was a comment from the "writer", Tom Ryle (a real idiot), that was completely unsupported.

"I was informed". Informed by who? A Hostile-like source? Did he text him? Was he perhaps joking? That guy, he is such a kidder.

I don't want to be a Homer McFanboy, but I'm really excited about Brian Price. Think he could prove to be a steal.

In the interest of full disclosure... I was also really excited about the acquisition of previous early draft busts turned Cowboys acquisitions Aaron Gibson, Dimitrius Underwood, & Bryant Westbrook in the early 2000's.

:lol Now that I think about it, I remember once upon a time justifying our lack of first round picks after the Galloway trade because we signed Gibson and Underwood, who were first round pick washouts with other teams.

God I used to be so retarded.

Emphasis on USED TO BE, right guys?

I don't know. For what it is costing, I have no issue with Price. Low risk, high reward move (same with Carlton Mitchell who also intrigues me). My concern is that they use that as a justification not to do something.

I think Jerry is still hung up on the idea of "progress stoppers" so he is loathe to bring in competition if he has a young guy there...even if the young guy sucks. Might be why the Cowboys depth sucks.

Think this plays into RT too
