The Cowboys released cornerback Terrance Mitchell and waived injured cornerback Brandon McGee on Friday.

Parting ways with Mitchell is a somewhat surprising move considering how highly Cowboys coach Jason Garrett spoke of him last week. Mitchell, who played corner in three games for the Cowboys last season, had been getting some organized team activity reps at safety.

"He's got a good feel and instinct for the game," Garrett said. "He has a lot of physical traits that would make you think he could play safety. You saw some of that when he was playing nickel last year at the end of the year. He just has some awareness about him. He has some play-making ability. But he's a young player. He's got to learn how to play consistently at this level.

"But we just felt like he could be a pretty good fit back there, and he's responded well to that opportunity."

Mitchell intercepted a pass and recorded 12 tackles in three games with the Cowboys last season. Dallas picked Mitchell in the seventh round of the 2014 draft.

He was released in August 2014 and then signed by the Chicago Bears. He played five games with the Bears in 2015 before rejoining the Cowboys last December.

Well I guess they couldn't have two guys wearing the same number could they.

Weird. Of all the positions where they have a player to play a need (safety) and a depth (speed, range DB). Unless they were going to sign Boykins.

Must have done something. Wonder if he did the math out loud about how Jason's system and coaching hasn't resulted in anything good.

A couple reports said the move wasn't made to sign Boykin.

Boykins doesn't play safety either by the way.

True. Just trying to figure it out. DB for DB.

Mitchell had 12 tackles in 3 games and an interception. If that were his average he would have 64 tackles and over 4 interceptions in a ful season. That's better than anything we have now at safety.

He was a preseason star last year. It is an odd release, IMO. Wonder if he requested it or what?

From what I've read he's very undisciplined on the field. Plays with poor technique.

Yet the red headed genius says he has feel, instinct and awareness for the game.

And those are the only traits that are keeping Kellen Moore on the team...well, except that he knows the system very well. But so do the custodial staff, the cheerleaders and any opposing team who looks at the game film of the same four pass plays.

Speaking of Kellen Moore, why the hell is the OC allowed to have more say over player personnel than the scouting department? Isn't that the scouts job, the find the best talent. Everything I keep hearing is that Linehan is the reason Moore is still on the team, because he's comfortable with Moore. Maybe this team would perform better if they weren't so comfortable.
