Position: Center

Size: 6-3, 314

Age: 24

College: Maryland

Drafted: Undrafted in 2010

Experience: Entering his third season

Contract status: In the final year of his contract, Costa is scheduled to earn a base salary of $490,000.

2011 review: When the Cowboys decided to release five-time Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode last August and designate the inexperienced Costa as his replacement, they made a risky move. With little time to prepare for the greater demands of a starting role, Costa was thrust into an awkward position as the offensive line underwent a major transition last summer.

The Cowboys tried to ease the pressure placed on Costa by giving guard Kyle Kosier the responsibility of making some of the protection calls. Still, Costa struggled. In the Cowboys' first home game of the season, he botched snaps on three different occasions. On another, he was called for a penalty. It was a nightmarish game for Costa, a lighter lineman with short arms who would face problems throughout the season warding off defenders attempting to bull rush him.

Against San Francisco, New England and Arizona, his pass-blocking was particularly suspect and by the end of the 2011 campaign ProFootballFocus.com rated Costa the sixth-worst center among players who were on the field for 25 percent of their team's snaps.

2011 grade: C-

2012 Outlook: Costa's position as the starting center isn't exactly secure. He will have to prove to new offensive line coach Bill Callahan he is worthy of keeping his job while possibly having to battle for his role with other interior linemen such as second-year player Kevin Kowalski, 2011 seventh-round pick Bill Nagy and guard Mackenzy Bernadeau, a free agent who was acquired in March.

"He certainly faces competition," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. "We have a lot of guys, some young guys who we like there, but Phil did a good job for us last year...I just think the experience of playing will help him. Having said all that, he's got to compete every day to earn that job."

Costa seems to understand that. He added weight in the offseason and said he became stronger. Whether that muscle gain will lead to improvement is unknown at this point. What is certain is that Costa has to play better.

I don't see how you could watch the guy play in 2011 and grade him a C-.

Had F written all over it.

"they made a risky move" Geeze, that's serious sugar coating.

How about:

"they made a boneheaded error"
"they made a tragic mistake"
"they revealed their ignorance"
"they showed an utter lack of judgement"
"they hit themselves in the crotch"
"they screwed the pooch"

What else?

Guessing you were one of the one's crowing for Gurode's release for quite some time, before they actually did it

But after they did it and it went bad, everyone acts like they were behind Gurode and his play here all along

Gurode took all sorts of abuse from people while he was here, there wasnt alot of people (Cowboy fans, particularly those at CZ) who thought he was a really good player.

The fucking problem with all of this is that they will start Costa, and when he starts to fuck up... they won't make a switch, because then that will force them to admit that they were wrong and appear desparate and kneejerk. It's all about trying to save face with this fucking organization.

Why in the heck would you guess that? You whiffed on that one.

I was ready for Columbo to be let go (he was a warrior, but his body couldn't do it any more).

I was a bit surprised and mildly encouraged when they let Davis go, only to be much more surprised, in a negative way, when the Cowboys didn't sign a credible replacement. When the Cowboys cut Davis I was convinced that the Cowboys were going to sign a viable vet to take Davis' spot. ... and then the team didn't.

I still don't understand the decision to cut Gurode. If you are going to get rid of your decent starting center, you better have a viable replacement. The Cowboys didn't and they didn't seem to think it was a problem. It made no sense. ... especially when the team was already taking chances at G.

Gurode was overpaid and made some bad snaps in the shotgun. Still, releasing him without an adequate replacement was a epic mistake. Not knowing what you have (or don't have) on your roster continues to be our biggest weakness as a personnel department.

I for one had no problem with Gurode's release. After the season he had, he then decides to delay his surgery so that his recovery time would coincide to where he would miss as much training camp as possible, I was more than happy to see him gone. Now, I did wanted to see what Costa had. Now that I have. No more.

That's exactly right. I had no problem cutting him, as long as there was a player on the team that could outperform him.

Which is why I just stare in disbelief at the folks that wish Spencer gone. Who would we have signed better? Who? Name em. Let's get that puppy started!!

Spencer probably still has a job, because they saw what cutting all your issues at once does on the Oline and were like FU FU FU FU FU Spencer your FANCHISED TAGGED til we get to draft next year.

Thats exactly why the kept him. And concern over him actually ever being more than slightly above adequate is why he hasnt got a long term deal.
